Volleyball Players Complete Careers
-
- Ferrum, Va. -- Four
Ferrum College women's volleyball players recently completed their
careers with the 2003 season. Three players, Michelle
Martin (Martinsville, Va./Bassett), Shermika
Harris (Martinsville, Va./Laurel Park), and Lindsay
Cooke (Newsoms, Va./Southampton Academy) completed four-year
careers with the Panther volleyball program. Terri
Craig (Roanoke, Va./Northside) completed her third year at
Ferrum after transferring from Lynchburg College, where she played
for the Hornets as a freshman.
Martin closed out her career as one of the College's all-time
blockers. Martin had 386 career blocks, 21 shy of former
standout Tamiko Martin, who had 407 blocks from 1991-94.
Martin set the school record for season blocks with 109 in the
2000 season. Martin also played basketball two years for
Ferrum, in 2000-01 and 2001-02.
Harris was named to the Dixie All-Conference first team in 2002
and the USA South All-Conference second team in 2003. She
set school records for match kills (37 vs. Peace on 11/1/03) and
match attacks (68 vs. Peace on 11/1/03). Harris also plays
basketball for the Panthers, having completed three years thus
far. She was the Dixie Conference Rookie of the year in
2001, earning All-Conference second team honors that year.
Cooke played mainly the past two seasons as Ferrum's "libero",
a defensive specialist role. She also played basketball for
the Panthers one season in 2001, and has been a member of the
Ferrum softball team for the past three years. She helped
Ferrum win the 2002 Dixie Softball Tournament, and make their
first-ever appearance in the NCAA Softball Playoffs.
Terri Craig spent the past three season as Ferrum's starting
setter. She recorded 2291 career assists (in just three
years), falling just shy of the career assists record set by Susan
Reagan, who had 2299 from 1994-97. In Ferrum's match vs.
Peace on Nov. 1st this season, Craig came close to setting a new
match assist record when she recorded 50 assists. The record
of 59 was set by Reagan vs. Greensboro on Oct. 9, 1996.
