- Kinder Accepts Post at Transylvania
- Ferrum AD to Assume Same Role in Lexington
-
- Ferrum, Va. – Dr. Ted Kinder, Ferrum
College’s Director of Athletics for the past 10½ years, has
announced his resignation in order to accept the same position at Transylvania
University in Kentucky.
-
- Transylvania University is a liberal arts college
located in Lexington, Kentucky, with a coeducational enrollment of
1,100 students. The Pioneers compete within the Heartland Athletic
Conference, an eight-team league consisting of outstanding
independent academic institutions that also feature highly
competitive athletics programs. Transylvania currently sponsors 16
intercollegiate athletic programs.
-
- Kinder began his duties as Director of Athletics
at Ferrum in the fall of 1993. While at Ferrum, he assisted in the
development of the College’s Sports Hall of Fame, reorganized
the Panther Club, created and maintained a formal sports banquet
and awards program, developed an Athletics Department Policy
Manual, and worked to improve athletic facilities. He also
expanded Ferrum’s athletic program to include men’s and women’s
cross country and women’s lacrosse.
-
Kinder
led the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in creating the
league’s first-ever commissioner position. He also served on the
committee that would eventually rename the league to the USA South
Athletic Conference. Kinder served two year’s as Dixie
Conference President.
-
- Kinder spearheaded the drive to form the Atlantic
Central Football Conference, a seven-member football-only league
which began operations in 1999. At the time, Ferrum and the other
six schools were football-independents, with the new league
allowing for the recognition of student-athletes and the
stabilization of schedules. Although Ferrum and three other
schools departed from the ACFC when the Dixie began sponsoring
football, the league is intact today with six competing schools.
Kinder also wrote and proposed a conference sportsmanship
statement, which was approved and adopted by the Dixie Conference
in 2002.
-
- Kinder assumed responsibility for the men's golf
team during the 1999-2000 year, following the retirement of
30-plus-year Coach Ray Corron. He has served on the NCAA Division
III Men’s Golf Committee the past four years and is currently
that organization’s national chairman. Kinder is a member of the
U.S. Golf Association and the Golf Coaches Association of America.
-
- Dr. Dan Miller, Ferrum’s Vice President for
Student Services, thanked Kinder for his tireless service over the
past 10 years.
-
- “We’re losing a strong student-athlete
advocate in Ted Kinder”, said Miller. “His contributions to
college athletics extend beyond the Ferrum campus with his
involvement in the USA South Athletic Conference and NCAA.”
-
- “We would like to wish Ted and his family well
as he begins his new position at Transylvania and begins a new
chapter in an already notable career in athletic administration.”
-
- Kinder's previous collegiate coaching experience
includes having spent six years as head baseball coach at Eastern
Mennonite University. He also served two years as head women's
basketball coach and two years as assistant men's basketball coach
at EMU.
-
- Kinder has a published chapter entitled “Construction
of Athletic Facilities” in text Organizational Management
Administration for Athletic Programs. He holds membership in the
National Association of College Directors of Athletics, the
American Alliance for Health Physical Education, Recreation and
Dance, National Association of Division III Athletic Directors.
-
- A native of Matewan, West Virginia, Kinder is a
1979 graduate of Armstrong Atlantic State University, where he
received his bachelor’s degree. He went on to earn his master’s
degree from Georgia Southern University in 1982 and his doctorate
from Middle Tennessee State University in 1994.
-
- Kinder and his wife Teresa currently reside in
Rocky Mount with their son Thomas. He begins at Transylvania in
February. An announcement will be made shortly regarding
responsibilities for athletic administration at the College. For
