Ferrum College Hosts Sportsmanship Clinic
Panthers Work With 5th-Graders at Local Elementary School

Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College Department of Athletics hosted a Sportsmanship Clinic at Ferrum Elementary School today, working with a group of 50 5th-graders.

The event was sponsored by the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and promotes good sportsmanship throughout all levels of sports.  The league's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsored events on all nine campuses throughout the league's two states.

Also sponsoring SAAC Sportsmanship Clinics were Averett University, Shenandoah University, and Christopher Newport University in Virginia; and Chowan College, Methodist College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, Peace College, and Greensboro College in North Carolina.

The Ferrum student-athletes worked with the Ferrum Elementary 5th-graders but enlisting the kids into role-playing.  The children worked up mock situations of both good and bad sportsmanship.

Senior Tina McBride also spoke to the children, stressing the importance of being a good sport, while having fun and making friends through sports.  McBride has been Ferrum's SAAC Chapter President for the 2002-03 academic year.  She is a four-time All-Conference selection in basketball and also earned All-Conference in tennis once.  She was named a basketball All-American this past season.

Joining McBride in today's clinic were fellow Ferrum student-athletes Carrie Conques of the women's lacrosse team, Valerie Lord and Becky Soteres of the women's tennis team, Chris Ward of the football team, and Daisha Jackson, Tara Toland and  Ramonia Vest of the women's basketball team.

Also taking part in the day's activities were athletic department staff members Director of Athletics Dr. Ted Kinder, Volleyball Coach Kelly Caputo, Women's Basketball Coach Donna Doonan, and Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Bill Tharp.

Doonan, who also serves as Ferrum's Senior Woman Administrator and advises Ferrum's SAAC chapter, was pleased with the group of student-athletes that were on hand to work with the elementary school kids.

"I think the Dixie's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has done a great job this year in emphasizing sportsmanship throughout the league's sporting events this year," said Doonan.  "Taking it into the local communities is wonderful, where we can remind younger folks how important this is at all levels of sports from elementary school to professional sports."
