Ferrum Baseball & Softball Teams Win in Dixie Action
Women's Lacrosse Team Falls to Methodist
 
Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College baseball and softball teams were successful this afternoon, winning three games, while the women's lacrosse team dropped a match.  Ferrum defeated Christopher Newport University 6-1 on the road in Dixie Conference baseball action, while the softball team picked up 2-1 and 4-2 Dixie wins at home over North Carolina Wesleyan College.  Rounding out the day's action was a 21-7 loss to Dixie Methodist College in women's lacrosse. 
 
In softball, freshman Sonya Francis (Blairs, Va./Dan River) pitched all seven innings of the first game against N.C. Wesleyan, allowing just two hits, striking out three batters and walking two.  Junior Lindsay Cox (Waldorf, Md./LaPlata) went 2-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.  In the second game, Cox went 2-2 and scored a pair of runs.  Sophomore Jamie Reed (Danville, Va./Tunstall), pictured above, went 2-3 with a double, two RBI and a run.  Ferrum is now 15-10 overall and 5-7 in the Dixie.
Senior Jason Beale (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) pitched all nine innings in Ferrum's 6-1 baseball win over Christopher Newport, which is currently ranked #9 in the nation.  Beale scatted eight hits over nine innings, striking out five while walking none.  Beale also went 2-4 at the plate with a solo home run in the second inning.  Junior catcher Kevin Griffin (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) went 2-4 with a run scored.  Ferrum is now 23-2 overall and 8-1 in the Dixie.  

Senior Carrie Conques (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI), playing in her final career home game, scored three goals in the women's lacrosse team's 21-7 loss to Methodist.  Junior Ginni Matern (Stafford, Va./No. Stafford) had a pair of goals, as did sophomore Jennifer Phillips (Ferrum, Va./Franklin County).  Freshman goalkeeper Mariah Koptis (Richmond, Va./Hermitage) played all 60 minutes in net, making five saves.  The Panthers are now 2-9 overall, 1-3 in the Dixie.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
