Baseball Takes Two from Greensboro
Ferrum Wins Dixie Double-Header to Move to 7-1 in League Play
 
Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College baseball team swept Greensboro College in a Dixie Conference double-header today, winning the opener 10-9 and the nightcap 11-3.

In game one, Ferrum led 9-4 after seven innings only to see Greensboro storm back in the last two innings.  The Panthers held on for a 10-9 victory.  Mickey Russell (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) and Thomas Meeks (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) led the Ferrum offense by going 4-5.  Russell, pictured at right, had a home run and knocked in two runs.  
 
Kevin Griffin (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) was 2-4 with 3 RBIs.  Meeks picked up the win allowing nine runs (six earned) on eight hits in eight and a third innings of work.  Mike Tonzola (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) retired the final two Pride batters to pick up the save.
 
Ferrum put together another impressive offensive performance in game two to win 11-3.  Griffin went 4-4 with a home run, two doubles and 3 runs batted in.  Meeks was 3-4 with a home run and three RBIs.  Neil Zimmerman (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) and Jesse Bowles (Boones Mill, Va./Franklin County) both went 3-5 for the Panthers.  Tonzola pitched a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out 10.  
 
Ferrum improves to 21-2 overall and 7-1 in the Dixie with the wins.  Greensboro falls to 7-16, 2-6.  The Panthers return to action tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. non-conference game against Bridgewater College.  Ferrum resumes its conference schedule this weekend at Christopher Newport on Saturday and Sunday.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
