Baseball Team Eliminated from Dixie Tournament
Panthers Fall 7-3 to Averett
 
Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College baseball team was eliminated this afternoon from the Dixie Baseball Tournament with a 7-3 loss to Averett University.  The Panthers came into the tournament with the top seed, while the Cougars are the #5 seed.

Senior Wes Martin (Woolwine, Va./Patrick County), pictured here, went 2-4 with a run and an RBI for the Panthers.  Junior Carlos Sanchez (Stanleytown, Va./Bassett) was credited with the loss.  Sanchez (6-3) scattered 10 hits over seven innings, striking out six and walking two.  got the win in relief, allowing no hits in the last 2.1 innings, striking out two and walking none.

Richie Comerford led the Cougars, going 4-5 at the plate with a double, two RBI and a run.  Paul Fossum (5-0) got the win on the mound, allowing just four hits over 5.2 innings, striking out four and walking four.
 
Ferrum falls to 27-5 with the loss, while Averett improves to 25-11.  Averett is undefeated in the tournament and is playing Christopher Newport University for the title this afternoon.  The Captains need two wins over Averett to win the title, but Averett needs to win just once.  
 
The Dixie Conference Tournament champion received an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs.  Christopher Newport won the tournament last season, claiming the NCAA bid and eventually finished third in the nation.
