Men's Tennis Team Picks Up Two Wins
Brantley Ties School Record
 
Defiance, Ohio. -- The Ferrum College men's tennis team ran its record to 10-2 with a pair of wins on the road this weekend.  Playing nearby the hometown of senior Rod Baker (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee), Ferrum defeated host Defiance College and College of Mount St. Joseph, both by scores of 9-0.

Freshman Matt Brantley (Norlina, N.C./Warren County), pictured above, tied the school record for season total wins with 25.  He has a 13-3 singles, 12-3 doubles, and 25-6 overall record this season.  Former Panther standout Randy Farleigh set the record with 25 wins in 2001-02.
 
Against Defiance, freshmen Gabe Zakkak (Midland, Va./Liberty), Paul Matthews (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) and Brantley ach won at #1-3 singles, respectively.  Matthews won a tight three-set match in which he dominated the third set 6-1.
 
Baker secured a win at #4 singles for the Panthers, freshman Erich Trier (Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley) won at #5, and junior Matt Rhodes (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) won at #6.  In doubles, Zakkak and Baker won at #1, Matthews and Brantley won at #2, and Trier and David Gartrell (Hamilton, VA./Loudoun Valley) won at #3.

Against Mount St. Joseph, the same singles lineup took straight set wins, while in doubles, Zakkak/Baker won at #1, Matthews/Brantley won at #2, and Trier/Rhodes won at #3.
