Baseball Splits Double-Header with Hartwick
Panthers Suffer First Loss of Season, Avenge Loss in Nightcap

Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College baseball team split a double-header with Hartwick College today.  The Hawks took advantage of Panther miscues in the first game to prevail 7-3.  Ferrum dominated the nightcap, jumping out to a 13-0 lead after the first inning, and cruised to a 26-2 win.

Hartwick took advantage of four Ferrum errors in the last three innings of game one in order to erase a 3-0 deficit.  Sophomore pitcher Mike Tonzola (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) absorbed the loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out seven through six innings.  Senior Jason Beale (Charlottesville, Va./W. Albemarle) went 3-3 with two doubles and an RBI for the Panthers.

In game two, every Ferrum batter scored at least one run in the first inning as the Panthers bolted out to a 13-0 lead.  Twelve different Panthers scored runs and registered hits.  Ferrum out hit Hartwick 27-8 for the game.  Sophomore Pitcher Daniel Reynolds (Martinsville, Va./Fieldale-Collinsville) picked up his first victory of the year by allowing just five hits in four scoreless innings of work.

Ferrum now stands at 18-1 on the season, while the Hawks are 2-2.  The Panthers will try and improve upon their 4-0 Dixie Conference this weekend as they travel to Fayetteville, N.C. for a weekend series against Methodist College.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
