Ferrum Defeats Maryville 3-2 in Baseball
Panthers Improve to 15-0 with Non-Conference Win

Ferrum, Va. -- Freshman John Sain (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the winning run as Ferrum College beat Maryville College 3-2 at home this afternoon.

     Box Score

Sain, pictured at right, entered the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and singled after the Scots intentionally walked senior third baseman Neil Zimmerman (Vinton, VA./William Byrd).

The game was tied 1-1 after the scheduled seven innings, and Maryville plated another run in the top of the eighth inning to go up 2-1.  Senior outfielder Wes Martin (Woolwine, Va./Patrick County) evened the score with a lead-off homer in the bottom half of the frame.  Martin went 2-4 this afternoon.  The second game was cancelled due to rain.

With runners at first and third, Maryville intentionally walked Zimmerman, brining Sain to the plate.  In Sain's ninth plate appearance this season, he blasted a single to score junior catcher Kevin Griffin (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring).

Junior Carlos Sanchez (Stanleytown, Va./Bassett) pitched all eight innings for Ferrum, allowing just one hit and two runs (both unearned), and striking out four as he raised his record to 5-0 this season.  Sanchez has a 0.28 ERA thus far this season in 32 innings, striking out 32 and walking just six.

The win improves Ferrum to 15-0, while the Scots fall to 9-9.  Ferrum is scheduled to return to action Thursday, March 20, with a non-conference home game against Emory & Henry College.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
