Ferrum Tops Shenandoah 16-5 in Baseball
Panthers Remain Perfect on the Season
 
Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College baseball team improved to 14-0 overall and 2-0 in the Dixie Conference with its second straight victory over visiting Shenandoah University.
        
The Panthers scored four runs in their half of the first inning only to have the Hornets tie the score at 4-4 with four runs of their own in the top of the second inning.  Ferrum broke the game open scoring seven runs over the next three innings and added five more runs in the seventh inning to win 16-5.
 
Senior second baseman Mickey Russell (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) (pictured at right) went 4-6 with two doubles, three runs, and two stolen bases.  Junior first baseman Thomas Meeks (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) was 4-5, scored twice, and drove in a run.  Senior third baseman Neil Zimmerman (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) went 2-4 with four RBIs and scored twice. Junior outfielder Ricky Peace (Hopewell, Va./Hopewell) belted his second home run of the season.  He finished 2-5 on the day with four RBIs.  Senior pitcher Jason Beale (Charlottesville, Va./W. Albemarle) went eight innings surrendering five runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out eight Hornets.
 
Tyler Daniel went 2-4 with a run and two RBIs for Shenandoah (2-8-1, 0-2 Dixie).  The Panthers out hit the Hornets 21-8.
 
Ferrum will be back in action Wednesday, March 19th, as Maryville College visits for a double-header beginning at 2 p.m.  The Panthers then welcome Emory & Henry College on Thursday, March 20th, before heading to Chowan College for a Dixie Conference series this weekend.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
