Panthers Win Dixie Baseball Opener
Late Rally Keys 12-2 Win 
 
Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College baseball opened 2003 Dixie Conference play with a 12-2 victory over visiting Shenandoah University this afternoon.
 
Shenandoah held a 2-0 advantage after six innings, but Ferrum rallied late, scoring six runs in both the seventh and eighth inning to break the game open.               

Junior right fielder Brandon Hale (Coeburn, Va./Coeburn) (pictured at right) went 3-5 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBIs.  Senior first baseman Jason Beale (Charlottesville, Va./W. Albemarle) went 2-4 with one RBI.  Junior catcher Kevin Griffin (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) went 2-4 with a run and an RBI.  Senior third baseman Neil Zimmerman (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) went 2-5, scored twice and added an RBI.  Junior pitcher Thomas Meeks (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) hit his fifth home run of the season, and pitched six innings giving two runs on five hits while striking out seven.  Junior Carlos Sanchez (Stanleytown, Va./Bassett) picked up the win and improved to 3-0 on the season going three innings and surrendering just one hit while striking out two.
 
For Shenandoah, Tyler Daniel hit a home run in the top of the sixth inning.  Josh Bosley doubled and picked up an RBI in the first inning to account for the Hornet scores.  Seth Foster went 6.2 innings on the mound allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out five.
Ferrum improves to 13-0 overall and 1-0 in the Dixie, while Shenandoah falls to 2-7-1 and 0-1.  The teams meet again tomorrow, Sunday, March 16th at 2:00 p.m. in Ferrum.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
