Ferrum Athletes Earn Dixie Honors
Five Spring Athletes Named Dixie Players of the Week
 
Ferrum, Va. -- Five Ferrum College spring sport athletes have been named to this week's Player of the Week list by the Dixie Conference.  This is the first week in which Ferrum's spring teams have been so honored.

In baseball, junior Carlos Sanchez (Stanleytown, Va./Bassett) was named Pitcher of the Week.  Sanchez, pictured at right, earned a pair of wins last week, in 15 innings of work on the mound.  He struck out 15 while allowing just four hits, three earned runs and no walks.  Freshman B.J. Durham (Danville, Va./George Washington) was named Baseball Rookie Pitcher of the Week.  Durham went 2-0, pitching six innings, striking out 5 and walking two.  Both players helped the Panthers to an 8-0 mark during a spring break trip to Fort Myers, Florida.  The Ferrum baseball team is 11-0 heading into this afternoon's home game against Bluefield College.

In men's tennis, senior Rod Baker (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and freshman Gabe Zakkak (Midland, Va./Liberty) have been named Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.  Baker went 3-0 at #4 singles and 1-2 at #2 doubles last week, while Zakkak went 3-0 at #1 singles and 1-2 at #1 doubles.  Both players helped the Panthers to a 3-0 mark during a spring break trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.  Ferrum is 4-1 heading into a March 13 match at home against Roanoke College.
 
Freshman Sonya Francis (Blairs, Va./Dan River) has been named Dixie Softball Rookie of the Week.  In 12 innings, she struck out 14 and walked nine as she went 1-1 for the week.  The Panthers are 5-2 overall this season.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
