Baseball Takes Two From Pikeville
Panthers Open Season With 6-2, 4-2 Wins
 
Ferrum, Va. -- After a rain-soaked past few weeks in which four Ferrum College baseball games were either cancelled or postponed, the Panthers took to the diamond this afternoon and swept visiting Pikeville (Ky.) College by scores of 6-2 and 4-2 in a non-conference doubleheader at home.

In the first game, senior first baseman Wes Martin (Woolwine, Va./Patrick County) and junior outfielder Brandon Hale (Coeburn, Va./Coeburn) each solo-homered to lead the team.  Martin, pictured above, went 2-3 on the afternoon.  Junior Thomas Meeks (Rocky Mount, Va./Franklin County) went five innings on the mound, giving up three hits and six walks, while striking out two.

In game two, senior third baseman Neil Zimmerman (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) went 3-3 with a run, an RBI, and a stolen base.  Senior Jason Beale (Charlottesville, Va./Western Albemarle) went the entire seven innings, allowing five hits and no walks, while fanning nine.

The Panthers are now 2-0 overall, while the Bears fall to 0-2.  Ferrum will return to action this week on Monday and Wednesday with a pair of non-conference games Hampden-Sydney College Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. and at Lynchburg College Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
