Tennis Teams Split with Greensboro
Men Win, Women Lose in Season-Opener

- Ferrum, Va. -- The Ferrum College men's
and women's tennis teams split a Dixie Conference tennis
doubleheader with visiting Greensboro College this afternoon in
Ferrum. The men won 6-1, while the Panther women fell 9-0.

- Senior Rod
Baker (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) was victorious at #4 singles with
a 6-3, 6-2 win over Jonathan Abbott. Freshmen David
Gartrell (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Valley) and Erich
Trier (Middleburg, Va./Loudoun Valley), former high school
teammates, won singles matches at #5 and #6 singles,
respectively. Gartrell was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over GC's Natt
Parr, while Trier breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Corey Taylor.
Zakkak and #1 doubles partner freshman Paul
Matthews (Richmond, Va./JR Tucker) won 8-5 over Greensboro's
Weaver and Nickolay Bochillo. Brantley and Trier defeated
Parr and Taylor 8-3 at #3 doubles.

- In the women's match, freshman Casey Warner (New Castle,
Del./William Penn) lost a close three-set battle at #5 singles,
falling 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Greensboro's Leigh Leonard.

- The Ferrum men are now 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Dixie, while
Greensboro falls to 0-2, 0-1 Dixie. The Ferrum women are 0-1
overall and 0-1 in the Dixie, while Greensboro improves to 1-1
overall, 1-0 Dixie. The Ferrum men will be back in action
Feb. 25 when they host Averett University at 3 p.m. in another
Dixie match-up. The Panther women host Randolph-Macon
