Ferrum's Venable Named All-America
Football Standout Earns Spot on Football Gazette Third Team
 
Ferrum, Va. – Ferrum College sophomore defensive back Darren Venable (Covington, Va./Covington) has been named Don Hansen's Football Gazette's All-America third team.  
 
Venable was an All-Region first team selection, announced on December 10th, making him eligible for the 2002 Division III All-America team.
 
The honor caps a year of major honors for Venable, including the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's 2002 Defensive Player of the Year award.  (see more on Venable)
 
Venable registered a team-high 99 tackles this season, including 38 solo and seven for loss.  He made four interceptions for 52 yards, blocked a punt which resulted in a Ferrum safety and blocked an extra point attempt.
 
Venable was a first team All-Conference selection in the Dixie Conference this season, as the leading vote-getter at the defensive back position.  His Defensive Player of the Year award was Ferrum's second in three years.  Former standout Tone' Dancy earned the honor in 2000.

In two years at Ferrum, Venable has registered 185 tackles, including 73 solo stops and 14 for loss, five interceptions, two pass breakups, two blocked kicks and a safety.  
 
Ferrum closed out the 2002 season at 5-5 overall, winning a share of the Dixie football title at 5-1 in league play.  It was Ferrum's second straight Dixie football co-championship.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
