Ferrum Football Players Named All-Region
Venable Earns First Team Honors

Ferrum, Va. – Two Ferrum College football players have been named to the 2002 Don Hansen's Football Gazette NCAA Division III All-South Region team.

Sophomore defensive back Darren Venable (Covington, Va./Covington) has been named to the All-South Region first team, while senior linebacker Kelvin Fuller (Norfolk, Va./Fork Union) was a third team selection.

Venable, pictured above, had 99 tackles this season, including 38 solo and seven for loss.  He also made four interceptions for 52 yards, blocked a punt which resulted in a Ferrum safety and blocked an extra point attempt.

Venable was a first team All-Conference selection in the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this season, as well as the 2002 Dixie Conference Defensive Player of the Year.   As a first team selection, Venable is now eligible for the Football Gazette's All-America team, to be announced in the next few weeks.

Fuller, pictured at left, made 96 tackles, including 40 solo and six for loss.  He also recorded one sack and blocked a field goal attempt.  Fuller was a Dixie All-Conference selection this year for the second straight year.  He was a four-time All-Conference first team selection for Ferrum, having earned the honor in the Atlantic Central Football Conference in 1999 and 2000 prior to Ferrum's competition in Dixie football competition.

Ferrum closed out the 2002 season at 5-5 overall, winning a share of the Dixie football title at 5-1 in league play.  It was Ferrum's second straight Dixie football co-championship.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
