Ferrum Splits Dixie Doubleheader with CNU
Women Win 80-71, Men Fall 79-70
 
Ferrum, Va. –  The Ferrum College men's and women's basketball teams split a Dixie Conference doubleheader with Christopher Newport University this afternoon with the women winning 80-71 and the men losing 79-70 in Newport News, Virginia.

In the women's game, sophomore point guard Tara Toland (North, S.C./North) led all scorers with 23 points on 7-16 shooting from the floor.  Toland, pictured at right, went 3-8 from behind the arc and 6-8 at the line.  She is Ferrum's leading scorer this season, averaging 16.9 points through 12 games.

Sophomore forward Tawanna McCall (Bassett, Va./Bassett) had a career-high 18 points to go with 14 rebounds and four steals.  Junior forward Tanisha Durham (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) had 15 points and 14 rebounds, while senior guard Tina McBride (Glade Hill, Va./Franklin County) had 11 points.

Christopher Newport led 40-34 at halftime, only to see Ferrum storm back and outscore the Captains 46-31 in the second half.  The win is the Panthers' 10th in their last 11 games.  Ferrum improves to 10-2 overall and stays unbeaten in the Dixie at 2-0.  Christopher Newport is now 8-4 overall, 1-1 in league play.  The Panthers host Shenandoah University Tuesday, Jan. 21 in another Dixie doubleheader.  The women are set to tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
 
Freshman guard Chris Jackson (Clayton, N.C./Garner) led Ferrum's men with 17 points in the loss to CNU.  Jackson, pictured at left, went 3-9 from the floor (3-7 from behind the arc) and was money from the line, going 8-8.  He is third on the team in scoring this year at 11.8 points per game, and leads the team in three-point field goal percentage at .448 (30-67).
 
Freshman guard Jamaal Eatmon (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) scored 14 points this afternoon, while junior forward Kevin Aigbe (Nashville, Tenn./Volunteer State) had 13 points.
 
Ferrum led 43-32 at halftime, only to see the Captains come back for the win, outscoring the Panthers 47-27 in the second half.  CNU improves to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the Dixie, while Ferrum falls to 4-8 overall and evens its league mark at 1-1.
 
The Panthers play at Randolph-Macon College Sunday, Jan. 19, at 3 p.m. in Ashland, followed by the Shenandoah doubleheader at home Jan. 21.  The Randolph-Macon game is a make-up game from its originally scheduled date of Dec. 5.  For more information, please contact the Ferrum sports information office at (540) 365-4306.
