Ferrum Baseball Players Read to Kids
Panthers Visit South Salem Elementary

Ferrum, Va. – Two members of the Ferrum College baseball team visited children Thursday, December 20, at South Salem Elementary School in Salem, Virginia.  The project is part of the College's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), in which each athletic team is attempting to provide one community service project each year.

Junior Mickey Russell (Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) and sophomore Travis Nowlin (Patrick Springs, Va./Patrick Co.) visited Ms. Banes' kindergarten class at South Salem Elementary, and each read Christmas stories to the children.  Ferrum Assistant Baseball Coach Darren Hodges accompanied Russell and Nowlin.  (see more pictures)

Russell and Nowlin anchor Ferrum's middle infield at second base and shortstop, respectively.  Russell was an All-Conference second team selection in the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season, while Nowlin was the 2001 Dixie Rookie of the Year.

The SAAC is comprised of two student-athletes from each sports team at Ferrum, working toward dealing with issues which affect student-athletes and teams.  Ferrum competes in the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, which hosts a SAAC meeting each year with at least one representative from each of the league's eight members participating.
