Ferrum Panthers in the Pros
Updated: Monday, November 26, 2007

Ferrum has had a number of student-athletes sign contracts and play professional sports.  Billy Wagner is currently with the New York Mets, but began with the Houston Astros, which selected him as the 12th pick overall in the 1993 MLB draft.  He then went to Philadelphia before joining the Mets.  After taking over as Houston's closer early in the 1997 season, he set a major league record with a 14.4 strikeouts per nine innings average.  One of the hardest-throwing lefthanders in the game, Wagner's fastball has been clocked at 99 miles per hour.  Through the 2007 season, Wagner had earned 5 All-Star nods (1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007).

Ferrum's most successful pro football player was Chris Warren, who played for the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles after stints with the Dallas Cowboy sand the Seattle Seahawks.  At Seattle, Warren was a four-time All-Pro running back for the Seahawks.

Eric Owens'
most recent major league action was during the 2003 season, when he was with the Anaheim Angels.  Owens also played for the Florida Marlins, Cincinnati Reds, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres.
