James A. Davis ’65
Winchester, Virginia
 
Jim Davis was co-captain while playing forward fro the Ferrum basketball team. He was a member of the first Ferrum basketball team to compete in the NJCAA tournament and was named most valuable player. He graduated from Ferrum with Phi Theta Kappa honors. He earned a bachelor’s of science degree in history from Randolph-Macon College, a master’s degree in history from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as well as a doctorate in higher education from Florida State University. He returned to Ferrum College and served as an assistant basketball coach, history professor, and Dean of the College. He received the Ferrum College Distinguished Alumni Award in 1973 for his service to the College. He serves his community as a member of the Braddock Street United Methodist Church and the Winchester Rotary Club. He is involved with the Boy Scouts of America, initially with the Patrick Henry District and later as President of the Shenandoah Area Council. He was named Outstanding Citizen in 1984 by the Woodmen of the World and voted Administrator of the Year in 1988 by the Greater Madison Foundation. He currently serves as President of Shenandoah University.
Joseph A. Davis ’61
Lynchburg, Virginia
 
Joe Davis was a member of the Athletic Council while attending Ferrum and served as a manger and trainer for the Ferrum College baseball, basketball and football teams. He returned to Ferrum College as head men’s basketball coach in 1975 and led the Panthers to back-to-back Cavalier-Tar Heel Conference Championships in 1976 and 1977. He was named Cavalier-Tar Heel Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1977. He led the Ferrum College Basketball team to a national ranking of 11th and an overall record of 42 wins and 15 losses during his tenure. He received a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a master’s degree in guidance from Radford University. He began his coaching career in 1966 at Glenvar High School and has amassed a career record of 400 wins. He has earned six Coach of the Year and currently serves as Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Assistant Athletic Director, Head Golf Coach and Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Movement Science and Recreation at Lynchburg College.
Edgar Eugene “Gene” Evans
La Crosse, Virginia
 
Gene Evans served Ferrum College for nine years as Athletic Director, head baseball, basketball and volleyball coach and assistant football coach, as well as head trainer and Director of Intramural Sports. He was a part of the 1965 Ferrum College National Junior College Football Championship Team. He is credited with building the intramural program at Ferrum. He received the 1966 Ferrum College Distinguished Alumni Award for Service to Higher Education. He was selected as Outstanding Recreational Specialist by the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance and he received the Pioneer Award as well. He was selected as both Outstanding Education of America and Outstanding Outdoor Education Instructor-Consultant.
Debra A. Hayes ’76
Marion, Virginia
 
Debra Hayes played Ferrum College basketball, tennis and volleyball. She was a member of the first women’s tennis and volleyball teams at Ferrum College. She was the first female athlete to receive the Ferrum College President’s Cup Award. She earned a bachelor’s of arts degree from Emory and Henry College where she played basketball, tennis and volleyball. She coached basketball, track and volleyball at Marion Middle School.
John T. Quinn ’66
Floral Park, New York
 
John Quinn played point guard for the 1964-1966 Ferrum College basketball teams. He was named to the First Team All Conference in 1965 and 1966, the most valuable player in the Cavalier-Tar Heel Conference Tournament and the Region 10 Tournament in 1965 and 1966 and named to the NJCAA All-Tournament Team in 1965. He received the Sportsmanship Award at the 1965 Hargrave Invitational Tournament and was the first basketball player in Ferrum College history to be named an All-American. He scored over 1000 points in his career history. He is active in his District 29 Challenger Division baseball and basketball programs. He received the William Winters Memorial Award in 1992, the District 29 Volunteer of the Year Award in 1993 and the Youth Appreciation Award from the District 29 Challenger Division in 1992, 1993, 1995, and 1996. He is currently with Dain Bosworth Incorporated as a liaison between floor brokers and customers on the New York Stock Exchange.
Sam Webb ’56 
Salem, Virginia
 
Sam Webb is created with starting the modern day athletic program at Ferrum College. He was the first head baseball, basketball coach as well as Athletic Director. He also taught classes in the Physical Education Department. He instilled the belief in his players that “It’s not whether you win or lose but how you the play the game.” He was honored by the dedication in the 1956 Beacon Yearbook and granted honorary alumni status for his contributions to Ferrum College. He has officiated at high school and college basketball and football games for more than 20 years. He played three years of professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system. He serves his community through the Roanoke Moose Lodge and as a member of Central United Methodist Church.
