Roy
William Clark ’77
- Martinsville, Virginia
-
- All-Conference and leading hitter for the 1976
and 1977 Ferrum baseball teams. Named Ferrum College first team
All-American in 1977. Earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in recreation
administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,
where he also played baseball. Played second base and shortstop with
the Seattle Mariners from 1979-1982. Coached one year for the
Seattle Mariners before becoming a scout. Scouted for the Cleveland
Indians before joining the staff of the Atlanta Braves. Member of
the 1995 World Series Champion Atlanta Braves. Served as a volunteer
consultant for the Martinsville-Henry County youth baseball
programs. Member of the Martinsville Recreation Association. Little
League parent. Currently a scout for the Atlanta Braves Professional
Baseball Organization.

Kenneth
D. “Skinny” Journell ‘57
- Roanoke, Virginia
-
- Played Ferrum College basketball and football
1955-1957. Ferrum’s first Junior College All-American in 1957.
Played in the first East-West Junior College All-American Bowl Game.
Named co-captain and tri-captain of Ferrum football team and manager
for the baseball team. President of the Varsity Club 1956-1957.
Coached sandlot football, recreation basketball, and Little League
baseball and served as an assistant football coach for Northside
Junior High School. Umpire for Little League and Men’s League
baseball. Principal organizer of the North Roanoke Recreation Club
where he served as both athletic director and coach. Member of
Northview United Methodist Church. Received the Citizen of the Year
Award for Community Service from the Hollins Lions Club in 1972; the
Campbell Salesman Merit Award in 1979; and the Ferrum College
Distinguished Alumni Award in 1987. Recently retired from ITT Night
Vision.

Rae Gunter-Lewis ’83
- Hampton, Virginia

- Captain of the Ferrum College women’s 1982
State Championship and 1983 basketball teams. Named Fastbreak
All-American in 1982. Played in the 1983 Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics for Women National Tournament. Named
All-State at both Ferrum College and Radford College in 1984 and
1986, respectively. Earned a Bachelor of Science degree in child
development from Radford College. Member of the National Association
of Early Childhood Education. Little League basketball coach.
Currently a teacher at the Downtown Hampton Child Development
Center.

Wilmer
E. Leatherman ’64
- Harrisonburg, Virginia

- Played guard
on the basketball team and pitched for the baseball team during his
two years at Ferrum. Named All-Conference for basketball 1964.
Earned Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from
Milligan College and a master’s degree in physical education from
Lynchburg College. Two trips to the NCAA basketball tournament, one
each as an assistant coach with James Madison University and as head
coach for Bridgewater College. Active in the community as a member
of Asbury United Methodist Church and as a Little League and
American Legion baseball coach. Operates basketball clinics for area
elementary school, city and county recreation departments, and the
All-Star Basketball Camp for boys and girls. Part-time scout for the
Cincinnati Reds baseball organization. Currently serves as head
basketball coach for Bridgewater College.

Robert Rose ’58
- Nellysford, Virginia
-
- Named co-captain for both Ferrum football and
baseball. Named National Junior College All-American 1957-1958. Led
the baseball team in batting and home runs. All-Conference football
player at Emory & Henry. Earned a bachelor of arts degree in
history from Emory & Henry College, a master’s degree in
education from the University of Virginia, and his doctorate in
education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Returned to Ferrum College as Dean of Student Affairs and assistant
football coach from 1969-1971. Active in a variety of community
organizations including Rotary Club, Wintergreen Valley Association,
Little League Football, and Babe Ruth Baseball. Named Man of the
Year for Prince William County and Manassas in 1987. Active
volunteer in his church, local elementary school, retirement homes,
and hospitals. Named High School Football Coach of the Year at
Alleghany County High School in 1964 and at Edison High School in
1967. Currently serves as Director of Risk Management for the
Virginia School Board Association.

Earl
G. “Bud” Skeens, Jr.
- Ferrum, Virginia

- Member of the Ferrum College faculty for more
than 30 years as an associate professor of history. Ferrum College
tennis coach 1965-1988 and 1996-1997. Overall coaching record for
men’s tennis of 345-41. Received 14 Coach of the Year awards.
Thirteen undefeated teams in 27 years of coaching. Team won 77
consecutive matches and seven Cavalier-Tarheel Conference titles
from 1967-1973. Received three Teacher of the Year awards. Received
the 1990 Sears College Teaching and Campus Leadership Award.
