Lawson A. “Slick”
Andrews ‘61
- Gretna, Virginia

Co-captain of both the football and basketball teams and lettered in
baseball, basketball, and football at Ferrum. Member of the first
Panther team that had an undefeated season in the history of the
school. Named Junior College All-American in baseball. Transferred to
Lynchburg College where he earned All-American honors in baseball.
Signed with the Philadelphia Phillies upon graduation from Lynchburg
in 1963. Holds bachelors and master’s degrees from Lynchburg College.
Has worked as a coach and teacher at Gretna High School since 1967.
Former head football and head basketball coach at Gretna, he currently
is coach of the golf program, which he started there in 1980. Active
athletics booster who works with Little League sports in the
community.

Richard Mills Barrett
‘58

Scored first touchdown in Ferrum football history. Co-captain who led
the team in scoring with 14 touchdowns in 1957. Named to Dean’s List
for academic achievement. Received full scholarship to Xavier
University where earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Taught and
coached in the Cincinnati Public School System for seven years, during
which time he was named Outstanding Ohio High School Track/Field Coach
in 1965 and led the track and football teams to five district and four
regional championships. Graduated with a J.D. from the University of
Cincinnati College of Law in 1970. For the past quarter century, has
been active in a number of health and drug education groups across the
Commonwealth of Virginia. Has worked with Henrico County Public
Schools since 1971 as an administrator with health, safety, and drug
education programs.

Walter Murrie Bates, Jr., ‘70

Seeded number one on the men’s varsity tennis team both years he
attended Ferrum. Undefeated in his Panther career in both singles and
doubles. Named All-Conference Champion. Went on to attend West Chester
State College in Pennsylvania on a tennis scholarship. Obtained the
United States Professional Tennis Association teaching license and was
the pro at both Stonehenge Golf and Country Club and Virginia
All-Weather Tennis Club. Former mayor of Charlotte Court House who now
plays recreational tennis and teaches tennis fundamentals to young
people. Began a banking career after a back injury took him off the
professional courts and is now a vice president of First Federal
Savings Bank and manager of the bank’s Keysville branch. Retired
from banking career in 2006. Currently Head Tennis Coach at
Hampden-Sydney College.

Jerry Franklin Little ‘66

Named MVP in both football and baseball in 1966 at Ferrum. Starting
fullback, punter and co-captain of the 1965 National Championship
team. Starting catcher and captain of the baseball team. Member of the
Cavalier-Tarheel championship baseball team. Coached football and
baseball at Grenada High School team in Mississippi and helped the
football team win its first-ever bowl game. Returned to Ferrum College
to be the head baseball coach and defensive coordinator for the
football team. Saw two national football championships in 1974 and
1977 during his coaching career at Ferrum, becoming the only person to
both play in and coach a national championship football team for the
Panthers. Went on to coach at William Fleming High School and Cave
Spring High School. Currently athletics director of Franklin County
schools and a community volunteer with youth and recreation programs
county-wide.

Judson Philip Mason, Jr.
‘67

Trainer and manager of football, basketball and intramural baseball
during his tenure at Ferrum. Distinguished himself as trainer/manager,
photographer, and driver of the Golden Goose for the football team’s
1965-66 undefeated season and the 1966-67 team that were runners up to
the National Championship. Was a part of Ferrum’s basketball team’s
1965-67 seasons, which took the Panther’s to the Cavalier-Tarheel
conference and the Region 10 championship with a two-year combined
record of 48-7. Received Ferrum’s 1967 Distinguished Athletic Award.
Trainer for football, basketball, wrestling and baseball while earning
a bachelor’s degree at the College of William and Mary. Earned a
master’s degree while working his way to the rank of Colonel as a
naval aviator in the United States Marine Corps. In his 26 years of
military service, has accumulated over 5,000 hours of flight time. Has
received the Presidential Service Badge, the Meritorious Service Medal
with two Gold Stars, the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze
Star, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with Bronze Star and the order
of the Orange Nassau. Currently serves as the program manager for the
AV-8 Harrier at the Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, D.C.
