Emory Advances to Championship with 9-6 Win Over Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. -- Emory University earned a 9-6 win over Ferrum College at the NCAA Division III Baseball Regional, advancing to the championship game Saturday.

Ferrum opened a 2-0 lead after three innings, only to see the Eagles plate four runs in the fourth and add four in the sixth to take a commanding 8-2 lead.  The Panthers battled back with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to trim the lead to 8-6, but Emory scored a run in the eighth for the final count.

2B Joe Roth and 3B Frank Pfister went 3-5 with a double, two RBI and a run each to lead Emory (38-7).  CF Tommy Dugan also went 3-4 with an RBI and two runs.  Starter Sam Cunningham got the win, pitching five innings and allowing five hits and two earned runs. 

Ferrum was led by RF Matt Gammons, who went 3-5 with a RBI, a run, and a stolen base.  CF Brent Sowers went 2-3 with two runs, an RBI and three stolen bases.  Starter Jimmy Holm pitched 5.2 innings, and allowed nine hits and six earned runs in taking the loss.

Ferrum (25-17) will play the winner of Game 10 between #3 York College (Pa.) and #4 Methodist University, being played at 5:20 p.m. tonight.  If Methodist wins Game 10, then Game 11 would be played tonight at approximately 9 p.m.  If York wins Game 10, then Game 11 would be played Saturday at 10 a.m.
