Ferrum Advances With 5-3
Win Over Salisbury


FERRUM, Va. -- #6 Ferrum College advanced in NCAA Division III Baseball Regional play with a 5-3 win over #2 Salisbury University this afternoon at home.

The win keeps the Panthers unbeaten in the tournament and set them up to play the winner of tonight's game between #1 seed Emory University and #4 Methodist University.  Both teams enter the game, scheduled for a 7:50 p.m. start, unbeaten with 1-0 marks thus far.

Ferrum broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the third inning.  2B Daniel Heatwole singled to open the frame, then SS Jesse Fuller singled to center field to move Heatwole to second base.  Heatwole and Fuller advanced a base on a ground out by CF Brent Sowers.  Senior LF John Sain reached first on a throwing error, which scored Heatwole and Fuller.  3B Brett Thomas walked then stole second.  RF Matt Gammon then doubled to score Sain and Thomas.

Salisbury and Ferrum each scored a run in the sixth inning to make the score 5-1.  The Sea Gulls then got a pair of runs in the seventh inning when SS Brian Campbell's RBI single scored C Pete Callahan, and RF Andrew Jensen's sacrifice fly scored Camper.

Heatwole went 3-3 with a run, while Sowers went 2-4.  Starter Lincoln Garner got the win for Ferrum.  Garner pitched six innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs before leaving the game with four strikeouts.  Reliever Justin King pitched the last three innings to earn the save.  He allowed four hits and one earned run. 

Jensen, DH Hunter Wessells, and 3B Alex Vitale each went 2-4 for the Sea Gulls.  Ryan Bennick went the distance, pitching eight innings to get the loss. Bennick scattered 10 hits over eight innings, allowed all five runs (all unearned), struck out four and walked one.

Salisbury (33-9) will face York College (Pa.) at 10 a.m. Friday, May 18.  Ferrum (25-16) will play Friday at 1:15 p.m. against the winner of tonight's Emory-Methodist game.  For m ore information, please contact the Ferrum Baseball Pressbox at (540) 365-4241.
