York Eliminates Villa Julie with 21-0 Blowout
FERRUM, Va. -- The York College baseball team woke up from its offensive
slumber as the green and white hammered the Villa Julie Mustangs
21-0 in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Baseball Ferrum Regional
in Ferrum, VA. The green and white improve to 30-13 overall while
the Mustangs conclude their season with a mark of 24-21.

The Spartans opened the floodgates early, tallying six runs in the
top of the first inning. The Spartans sent 10 hitters to the plate
and banged out seven hits en route to the six runs. Freshman Mike
Connolly, freshman Anthony Anzalone, and Dennis Maxim each had RBI
hits in the inning while Matt Austin plated the final two runs of
the frame courtesy of a booming double to center.
The green and white tacked on single runs in the third and fourth
innings as the lead grew to 8-0. The Spartans blew the game
open in the sixth. York sent 12 men to the plate, collected six
hits, and scored eight runs as the lead ballooned to 16-0.
York added a Connolly RBI single in the seventh and then closed out
the scoring with four more runs in the eighth.
Junior Tim Frisch was the beneficiary of the bountiful Spartan
offense as he threw six innings, allowing four hits with two
strikeouts and one walk. Frisch improves to 6-3 with the win. Chris
Frankenfield, Randy Bond (Brandywine, MD/Riverdale Baptist), and
Logan Abel each pitched a scoreless inning to preserve the shutout,
the Spartans’ sixth of the year.
Buddy Breidenbaugh took the loss as he falls to 3-6 for the year.
Breidenbaugh allowed eight runs, six earned, on nine hits in four
innings. The Mustang bullpen was little relief as three VJC
relievers combined to allow 13 runs on 12 hits with three strikeouts
and a pair of walks in five innings of action.
The Spartans banged out 21 hits in the game, the fourth time this
year the Spartans have had 20 or more hits in a game. Four Spartans
hitters had three hits each led by Anzalone as the first baseman was
3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored. Senior Bryan Bednarczyk
(Columbia, MD/River Hill) was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs
scored. Connolly contributed three hits, three RBI, and a pair of
runs scored. Austin chipped in with three hits, including a pair of
doubles, three RBI, and a run scored. Maxim added two hits, three
RBI and two runs scored. Every Spartan starter had at least one hit
and seven starters had multiple hits. Senior lead-off hitter Jeff
Young (Wilmington, DE/Brandywine) scored four times and drove in
another with two hits.
Wade Keenan led the Mustangs with two hits including his seventh
two-bagger of the year. Dave Brown came off the bench and had a pair
of singles for Villa Julie.
The Spartans return to tournament action on Friday morning as they
face the loser of the Salisbury - Ferrum game. Friday’s contest is
scheduled to start at 10:00 am at Panther Field in Ferrum.

Game 6: 4:30 pm, #2 Salisbury vs. #6 Ferrum; Game 7: 7:45 pm, #4 Methodist vs. #1 Emory.
