Methodist Defeats Bridgewater in Opening Game
of NCAA Baseball Regional
FERRUM, Va. - The Ferrum Regional of the NCAA Tournament opened with
an offensive explosion, as the Methodist University (N.C.) Monarchs
defeated the Bridgewater College (Va.) Eagles by a score of 21-14.
The offensive barrage included a combined 33 hits and eight errors
between the two teams.
Box Score: Methodist 21, Bridgewater 14
The runs came early and often for both teams. The Monarchs took
advantage of two Eagle errors in the bottom of the first inning to
post a four spot, including a two-run single for Brad Davis.
However, Bridgewater stormed back with eight unanswered runs over
the course of the second and third innings, to take an 8-4 lead.
Methodist answered back though, scoring five-consecutive runs,
including a go-ahead RBI groundout for first baseman Kyle Eudy in
the bottom of the fourth. After the Eagles tied the game again in
the top of the fifth, the Monarchs broke away for good, scoring four
runs in the bottom of the fifth, and five in the bottom of the
sixth.
Bridgewater opened the eighth inning with back-to-back home runs
from Michael Lenox and Chance Dobbs, but it was too little too late
for the Eagles.
Methodist reliever AJ Vedrani picked up the victory for the
Monarchs, throwing 4.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing three
runs on six hits. The freshman improved his record to 3-0 during
the 2007 campaign.
Monarch designated hitter Mike Ellsworth finished the game
five-for-five with five RBIs and four runs scored, included a
bases-loaded triple in the sixth inning. Centerfielder Matt Hunt
added a two-for-five performance with four RBIs and five runs
scored.
Both teams will next face the tournament’s top seed, the Emory
University (Ga.) Eagles, in their next game of the South Regional.
Bridgewater will take on Emory tonight at 8:15 PM, in a win or
go-home situation, while Methodist will face the Eagles at 5:00 PM
tomorrow.
