Methodist advances with 9-0 Victory Over Mary Washington
  • Denning Fires 3-Hit Shutout, Monarchs Meet Emory in Elimination Game at 7 p.m.

    MARTINSVILLE, VA - Methodist College made it two victories in a row and stayed alive in the 2004 NCAA Division III Martinsville Regional on Saturday with a 9-0 victory over Mary Washington College at Hooker Field. In a regional filled with offensive exhibitions, this was the first shutout of the Martinsville Regional.
     
    Methodist (29-18) will now play top-seeded Emory in the 7 p.m. elimination game at Hooker Field, while Mary Washington ends its season at 30-12. The winner of the Methodist-Emory game meets Salisbury in the championship on Sunday at 12 p.m.
     
    The Monarchs' Adam Denning had a superb outing. The sophomore right-hander went the distance with a 3-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and one walk. In addition, he had plenty of offensive support from his teammates.
     
    Methodist struck for three runs in the second on RBI singles by Blake Maxwell, Matt Kleckner and Tom Matuseski. The Monarchs increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth when Jay Lucas scored from second on a throwing error by Eagle third baseman Marc Logan.
     
    The Monarchs broke it open with four runs in the seventh. Matuseski started the rally with an RBI single, scoring David Hoffman. That was followed by a two-run single by Ben Kaplan, and then Kevin Wallace scored on a fielder's choice by Allen Kent. Methodist scored its final run in the eighth on an RBI single by Maxwell, scoring Lucas.
     
    Maxwell and Matuseski both went 3-for-5 for Methodist with a run and two RBIs, while Lucas and Hoffman both went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Kaplan went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Kleckner went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
     
    For Mary Washington, left-hander Dylan White fell to 3-3 with the defeat, allowing eight runs and 12 hits in six-and-two-thirds innings with four walks and four strikeouts.
