Salisbury Wins with Wild Finish
Gulls Improve to 35-11 with Win Over Monarchs

MARTINSVILLE, VA - Second-seeded Salisbury University captured a 13-12 first-round victory over Methodist College in game two of the NCAA Division III Regional Baseball Tournament, held in Martinsville, Virginia.

Salisbury jumped ahead of the Monarchs 5-1 in the second inning only to see Methodist battle back and score twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to cut the lead down to 5-3.  The Gulls increased their lead with a five-run seventh inning.  Methodist would once again fight back, scoring three runs in the eighth inning and five in the ninth, with the tying run scoring on Blake Maxwell's single to center field.  Salisbury's Mac Mollet hit a one-out single up the middle and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Methodist's Adam Denning.  Mollet than advanced to third on Brandon Mason's infield single, giving the Gulls' runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, with Greg Lemon at bat.

However, the suspense would end one pitch later as the ball ricocheted off Monarch catcher Matt Johnson's glove and into the backstop.  Johnson picked up the ball just in time to watch Mollet score the winning run for the Salisbury Sea Gulls.

The Gulls' Nick Dunk registered his sixth win of the season, while the Monarchs' Adam Denning received his fifth loss of the season.  Salisbury was led by Nick Pegelow who was 3-5 with three RBI, Mike Williams who was 3-4 with two RBI, and Greg Lemon (pictured above), who went 3-5 with one RBI.  The Monarchs' Ben Kaplan led all batters with 4 hits, while Jay Lucas and David Hoffman each knocked in two runs.

Methodist will continue play Friday, May 21, at 11 a.m. against York College of Pennsylvania in game four of the regional tournament.  Salisbury will play in game six at 7 p.m. against the winner of #3 Virginia Wesleyan College and #4 Mary Washington College. Both games will be played at Hooker Field.
