TOP-SEEDED EMORY UNIVERSITY TOPS YORK PA, 10-3, IN NCAA DIVISION III MARTINSVILLE REGIONAL OPENER
Eagles Improve to 41-4 on the Season; Carr Improves to 13-0

MARTINSVILLE, VA - Second-ranked Emory University scored six first inning runs en route to a 10-3 victory in the opening contest of the NCAA Division III Regional in Martinsville, VA on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 41-4, while the Spartans fall to 28-17.

York had a quality scoring opportunity in the first inning, with the bases loaded and no outs, but Emory pitcher Will Carr struck out the next two batters, and enticed a fly ball to left field to end the inning. The Eagles also loaded the bases in the first, on hits by designated hitter Justin Gordon, center fielder Josh Barrett, and third baseman Andrew Pinckney, but took advantage with six runs thanks to a two-run double to left from left fielder Bryan Langbord, a sacrifice fly by catcher Adam Schorr, a single to shortstop by Paul Myslinski, and an error on the York third baseman. After a walk to load the bases, Gordon got his second hit of the inning, knocking in Rob Segear and Myslinski to cap the scoring.

The Eagles added a pair of runs in the third, as Schorr doubled to left field and advanced to third on a flyout by Myslinski. Segear singled to center to drive in Schorr, advanced to second on a walk by Gettinger, and scored on a single to right by Barrett. Emory moved the lead to 9-0 with a single run in the fourth, as Pinckney doubled to left, advanced to third on a single by Langbord, and scored on a sacrifice fly. York answered with three runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull to within 9-3, and each team added a run late to push the final score to 10-4.

Justin Gordon, Andrew Pinckney, and Bryan Langbord led Emory with three hits apiece, while Josh Barrett added a pair of hits. York was led by Jeff Moore and Rajiv Submaranian, who each had three hits, with Brian Bednarczyk, Jeff Young, and Chad Hockenjos each collecting two hits, as the Spartans outhit the Eagles, 17-16. Emory junior Will Carr allowed twelve hits and two earned runs in six and two-thirds innings, striking out six and walking none. York freshman Chris Brower absorbed the loss, allowing 14 hits in five innings, with eight earned runs allowed and two walks and four strikeouts.
