Ed Brown's Artist Statement
I began this series of landscape
drawing in charcoal six years ago when I used to drive to work before
dawn in the winter and would see leafless trees silhouetted against
the back of buildings along side of the highways around Washington,
DC. Although these drawings are based on actual landscapes they are
a product of both observation and imagination. I subscribe to Delacroix’s
definition of art as nature seen through a temperament. Because I am
influenced by both Classical and Modern artists my drawings are semi-
abstract. I am influenced by both Baroque artists such as Rubens and
Rembrandt as well as Modern art movements such as Abstract Expressionism
and Italian Futurism.
I have exhibited my drawings
in the Baltimore/ DC area and currently teach drawing in Salisbury,
MD at Salisbury University where I am a Henry C. Welcome fellow. I have
won various awards for my drawings including a Maryland State Art Council
Individual Artist Award and most recently Best of Show at the Maryland
Federation of Art annual drawing competition, Drawing Conclusions.
