August Term 2003

August 3 - 15, 2003

“August Term is two of the best weeks of your life.  It’s not designed to take away your summer, or give you homework either.  It’s more of a self-identity session that helps you make the transition to college in every way possible.  August Term also allows you to put down your differences and hang with everyone.  When I was in August Term I hung out with people that I wouldn’t usually hang out with.  Our Director, Ms. Crow, helps you put down your differences and find similarities within each other.  I found one of my best friends in August Term.  This will be the best investment of your life, and the most memorable.  I loved it so much that I came back as a Community Advisor.  Oh, my best friend came back as well, and we’re still enjoying it together!”  Greg Johnson, Residence Life Community Advisor, Student Government Legislative Vice President, tutor, member of the class of 2004.

This quote is probably the best description of the level of activity during August Term.  For the two weeks of August Term here at Ferrum College, you will attend classes in composition, math/science, college skills, computer applications.  You will also be involved each evening in organized activities which address different areas of college life and have the opportunity to take advantage of peer tutoring.

The classes will help you prepare for courses you will take your first semester at Ferrum College.  The composition class prepares you for English 101, the math/science class prepares you for math and science courses, the computer science class prepares you for basic computer classes, and all of this can put you ahead of your fellow freshmen.  In the college skills class you will begin working on note taking, textbook reading, understanding the college catalog, and planning your college career.

August Term carries two credits toward graduation from Ferrum College.  Our research has shown that students who attend August Term have a better than average opportunity for academic success since they have had  “a taste of college” and what it will require of them.  “I feel the best, and hardest, thing August Term teaches those who attend is time management.  If they don’t learn that they won’t survive August Term!”  Amy English, ARC/August Term student assistant, tutor, and member of the class of 2002.

Besides getting a “jump” on academics, an added bonus is that you will have two weeks to make friends with fellow freshmen, meet and get to know professors, learn about the campus and how it works, and become accustomed to college life.  “August Term has been my most favorite college experience.  August Term is what I consider to be the college before college.  It is a session that lets the students who attend get a feel and understanding of what college life is really like.  One of the best things for me about August Term was the friends I met and how much fun I had, which made me forget all about my homesickness (something I thought I would not get over).  August Term was so helpful and fun that I decided to come back as a community advisor.  This is the best way to start your college career right.” Erica Spurlock, Residence Life Community Advisor, August Term Community Advisor, tutor, and member of the class of 2004
