College is about expanding one’s horizons-both in and out of the classroom. One of the most fulfilling ways to experience college life is to participate in Student Government, campus committees, intercollegiate athletics, or in one of the many clubs and organizations offered. All students are urged to get involved and make the most of the opportunities already here.

You can become an active part of the College community by participating in any of the more than 50 clubs and organizations. Membership in a campus organization enriches the educational experience, improves leadership ability, enhances academic achievement, increases career success and develops social skills. If you would like to join one of these groups, simply contact the student leader or faculty/staff advisor listed below or stop by the Student Leadership and Engagement Office for more information.

 

ACADEMIC GROUPS


Accounting Club
– Open to all students interested in accounting. Contact Mr. Dave Sulzen, extension 4316.
 
Agriculture Club – Open to all students interested in agriculture, this group sponsors events each year including a number of field trips. Contact Dr. George Byrd, extension 4378.
 
Art Club – Open to all students with an interest in the arts. Activities include on-campus art related programs and events and off-campus gallery and museum trips. Contact Mr. Jeff Dalton, extension 4518.
 
Chemistry Club – An organization of students, faculty, and staff interested in chemical and biological sciences. Although it is not required of Chemistry Club members, the American Chemical Society offers students a discounted student membership rate. Contact Dr. Jason Powell, extension 4376.
 
Criminal Justice Club – The goal and purpose of this club is to promote, improve, and encourage high standards of ethical conduct, professional training, and higher education within the criminal justice field and to provide a unified voice for students of criminal justice in all matters of professional concerns. Furthermore, this organization provides the foundation for the Ferrum College Chapter of The American Criminal Justice Association-Lambda Alpha Epsilon. Contact Dr. William Osborne, extension 4283.
 
English Club – An organization of students, faculty, and staff interested in literature and communication. Members go to area events of interest and sponsor a book collection project and an Amnesty International group, among other activities. Contact Dr. Tina Hanlon, extension 4327.
 
Minds-n-Medicine – Open to all students interested in the medical field. Contact Dr. Chris Aylesworth, extension 4542 or Dr. Katie Jordan Goff, extension 4468. 
 
Passport – From its inception in 1992, The Passport has been used to demonstrate a meaningful commitment of our students to active learning. The students involved with this publication were expected to assume the challenge and responsibility to address, evaluate, and shape their learning experience at Ferrum. The Passport, therefore, came to represent our understanding of a liberal education that invites reasoned discourse and a culture of learning in which students participate in their own intellectual growth. Philosophy Club – The Ferrum College Philosophy Club is an organization of philosophy students and students interested in philosophy, which coordinates various activities such as the Ferrum College Philosophy Journal and Ferrum College Undergraduate Philosophy Conference, and also allows for a student voice within the Philosophy Department as a whole. Physical Education Major (PEM) – To further the exchange of information and cooperation between members, to promote health and fitness knowledge, and to conduct club programs and activities to advance the general interest and welfare of health and physical activity in the student body and community. Contact Dr. Shannon Hardwicke, extension 4385.
 
Psychology Club - Sigma Psi Delta – Society for psychology. This group provides educational and service experiences for people interested in psychology. Contact Student Leadership and Engagement Office, extension 4441.
 
Recreation Club – For students whose major or minor is in Recreation and Leisure or for those considering it along with Outdoor Recreation as a career option. This club sponsors numerous activities and assists members in attending professional conferences and workshops. Russian Club – Welcomes interest and membership from any Ferrum College student. The club attends performances highlighting Russian art, song, dance, culture, and speakers. Club members also become familiar with traditional Russian songs and dances, Russian arts and crafts, present performances, and hold workshops on these topics. Social Work Club – An active social and volunteer service organization designed to facilitate camaraderie and dedication to community. Social Work majors and all interested students are encouraged to join. Traditionally, elections are held in the fall semester. Contact Ms. Jennie West, extension 4406.
 
Spanish Club – To enhance and stimulate awareness of Hispanic cultures and interests. Contact Student Leadership & Engagement Office, extension 4441.
 
 
Students Engaged in Political Action and Community – A dynamic, educational, experiential, and learning group open to Political Science majors and other interested students, faculty and staff. This group is committed to active citizenship by promoting politics, community building and outreach programs. Contact Dr. Frederic Torimiro, extension 4404.
 
Students in Free Enterprise – Students in Free Enterprise offers students the opportunity to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills through learning, practicing and teaching the principles of free enterprise. SIFE teams teach important concepts through educational outreach projects, including market economics, entrepreneurship, personal and financial success, and business ethics to better themselves and their communities. Student Virginia Education Association – Gives pre-service teachers opportunities for professional involvement with other students and practicing teachers to advance the understanding and practice of public education. Contact Ms. Virginia Seale, extension 4395.

CAMPUS MEDIA

 

Chrysalis – A literary and graphic arts magazine produced by students using desktop publishing programs including PageMaker and Photoshop. Chrysalis sponsors monthly Coffee Houses for students, faculty and staff.  Students who enjoy creating poetry, short stories, photography, or artwork are encouraged to participate. Contact Mr. Matt LaRose, extension 4525.
 
FerrumRadio.com – This web cast station broadcasts daily from its Fitness Center studio and is managed and staffed by students. Membership is by interview and training is provided to new personnel. Contact Mr. Demond Hairston, extension 6920.
 
Iron Blade – The student-run newspaper gives students practical experience in all aspects of newspaper journalism, including digital photography and desktop publishing. Academic credit available and editors gets stipends. Contact Dr. Lana Whited, extension 4334.

HONORARY ORGANIZATIONS


Alpha Chi
– National Honor Society for juniors and seniors. Membership by invitation. Alpha Chi also works with students as they apply for prestigious scholarships and fellowships. Contact Dr. Katherine Grimes, extension 4264.
 
Alpha Delta Mu – National Honor Society for undergraduate Social Work majors who qualify academically. Membership by invitation in April. Contact Ms. Jennie West, extension 4406.
 
Alpha Epsilon Phi – Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi - Kappa Delta Pi is an International Honor Society in Education. The society was founded to recognize those individuals who excel in the field of education. Members range from students in an educational program of study to educators in a professional setting. The Alpha Epsilon Phi chapter at Ferrum College is a 2010 charter member of Kappa Delta Pi. The chapter is student lead and student driven. Our motto is “So to teach that our words inspire a will to learn; so to serve that each day may enhance the growth of exploring minds; so to live that we may guide young and old to know the truth and love the right”. Alpha Mu Gamma – National Honor Society for foreign languages. The society serves to recognize outstanding achievement in foreign language study and is represented on campus by the Gamma Omicron Chapter. Membership by invitation. Contact Student Leadership & Engagement Office, extension 4441.
 
Alpha Phi Sigma - The National Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma, was established in January 1942 at Washington State University.  Its mission isto promote analytical thinking, rigorousscholarship and life-long learning; to keep abreast of the advances in scientific research;to elevate the ethical standards of the criminal justice professions and to sustain in thepublic mind the benefit and necessity of education and professional training.
 
Collegiate members shall be students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs of regionally accredited institutions, have a declared major or minor in criminal justice or a related field, completed three full-time semesters or its equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and rank in the top 35% of their class.  Members must have a minimum of four courses in criminal justice. Delta Tau Alpha – National honor society for agricultural majors and minors. The purpose of the society is to provide and recognize high standards of scholarship, leadership, and character among agricultural students.   The society encourages and fosters high ethical standards in agriculture and professional positions held by agricultural students. Membership is by invitation only and potential members usually have junior or senior standing and must be in the top third of their academic class.   Contact Student Leadership & Engagement Office, extension 4441.
 
Kappa Pi International – International Art Honor Society. The purpose of this organization is to raise the standards of productive artistic work among students in colleges and universities. Membership has minimum requirements. Contact Mr. Matt LaRose, extension 4525.
 
Lambda Sigma – National Honor Society for sophomores which promotes educational experiences through service projects. Students are selected spring semester of their freshman year. Contact Ms. Susie Crow, extension 4265.
 
Phi Alpha Theta – International Honor Society in History. Membership by invitation. Contact Dr. Milton Rowan, extension 4405.
 
Psi Chi – National Honor Society for Psychology. Pre-professional experiences and service opportunities for outstanding students in psychology. Contact Dr. Sharon Stein, extension 4393.

PERFORMING ARTS


Classical Ensemble
– Prepares classical and chamber music for performances on and off campus. All students with instrumental experience are encouraged to participate. Develop your musicality, learn new material, show off your talent and earn college credit. Open to students and staff. Contact Ms. Susan Spataro, extension 4351.
 
Collegiates – An auditioned, 12-member, mixed ensemble and swing choir that performs a varied musical repertoire of sacred, spiritual, show tunes, and contemporary music for churches, high schools, and civic groups throughout Virginia. Contact Ms. Susan Spataro, extension 4351.
 
Concert Choir – A large mixed chorus that performs choral literature from all periods of music history, both on and off campus. Among the highlights of the year are the annual Christmas concert and a spring tour throughout Virginia and adjoining states. Contact Ms. Susan Spataro, extension 4351.
 
Gospel Choir – Brings you songs of joy to uplift your spirit. All students are encouraged to participate and lift their voices through song. Open to all students and staff. Contact Ms. Emily Tucker, extension 4307.
 
Hand Bells – Presents sacred handball music, as well as easy listening contemporary music with performances on and off campus. Membership is by audition. Contact Ms. Susan Spataro, extension 4351.
 
Improv – Provides an opportunity for students to perform improvisational comedy, enjoyable entertainment, and to promote social interactions with audience participation while fostering leadership skills and teaching members to work with others as a team.   Works in cooperation with Panther Productions and the Student Activities Committee to reach out to all members of the Ferrum community. We are based on two hit TV shows, ABC’s “Whose Line is it Anyway?” and MTV’s “Wild n‘Out”.   Contact Mr. Wayne Bowman, extension 4338.
 
Jack Tale Players – A touring children’s theater company based upon the folklore and music of the Southern Virginia Highlands. Performs throughout Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region. Contact Dr. Rex Stephenson, extension 4335 or Ms. Emily Tucker, extension 4307.
 
Jazz Ensemble – Develops jazz music for performances on and off campus. All students with instrumental experience are encouraged to participate, have fun performing, and earn college credit at the same time. RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS


Catholic Campus Ministry
– Ministers to the needs of the Roman Catholic community on campus. The advisor is available for pastoral counseling, marriage, and other sacrament preparation, and sponsors activities with the Chaplain’s Office and other religious groups. Fellowship of Christian Athletes - a non-denominational organization that presents to athletes, coaches, and all students whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the Church.   All Ferrum students are welcome. Contact Mrs. T.J. Ferrum Christian Fellowship – Non-denominational organization open to all students. Our goal is to reach out to the community to help those who are struggling in faith, school, and personal affairs with our prayers, Monday Night Praise (in association with the Chaplain and Rescue Mission), and many other exciting events throughout the year. Mu Sigma Chi - Mu Sigma Chi Fraternity promotes the interest and welfare of the College campus and instills in its members the desire to achieve academic success, leadership skills, and to develop in both the spiritual and physical realms of everyday life. We believe that in order to grow closer to God we must be a group of men that serves others without desire of personal recognition. Admissions Ambassadors
– Student volunteers who assist in new student recruitment by providing tours to prospective students, helping with Open House events, and occasionally hosting overnight visitors. Membership by invitation. Contact Mr. Jason Byrd, extension 4295.
 
African-American Student Association – Seeks to serve the community by promoting unity and cultural awareness among students, faculty, and staff. Open to all students. Contact Mr. Justin Muse, extension 4501.
 
Alpha Phi Omega – National co-educational service fraternity that is based on the principles of leadership, friendship, and service to humanity and is open to all students. Originally formed in the 1970’s, APO was restarted again in 2000. This group assists in a variety of community service projects. BACCHUS - (Boosting Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students) encourages responsible decisions about drinking within the campus community and increases awareness concerning healthy alternatives to alcohol use and abuse through programs and activities such as National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. Big Buddy/Little Buddy – An exciting way for students to have fun times with kids, be role models and to give back to the community. This organization pairs students with at-risk youth for monthly activities. Contact Dr. Michaela Gazdik, extension 4369 or Dr. Jasmine Goodnow, extension 4468.
 
Colleges Against Cancer – Open to all students, this group works in conjunction with the American Cancer Society and assists in organizing the annual Relay for Life. Contact Dr. Kevin Reilly, extension 4407 or Ms. Jill Adams, extension 4224.
 
Commuter Student Association – Addresses the special concerns of commuter students. Contact Mr. Dave Newcombe, extension 4463.
 
Environmental Action Coalition – Promotes environmental awareness through activities such as recycling, hiking, speakers, and special events. Contact Dr. Glen Stevens, extension 4554.

Ferrum College Traditional Karate Club - Non-competitive and open to all students. Training consists of a survey of Okinawa and Japanese karate (Goju NRyu and Shotokan) to develop the skills needed to manage conflict: striking, throwing, grappling, restraints, evasion and body conditioning. An understanding of the history, philosophy and development of the art is pursued through readings and special training seminars with internationally recognized guest instructors. The club is affiliated with the Traditional Karate Research Institute and the Seijinkai Karate-do Association. Fees are $25 per semester. Contact Mr. Randy Simpson, extension 4274.
 
Ferrum Dance Team – Our goal is to help elevate school pride through dance at athletic events and other social events on and off campus. Open to all students. Contact Ms. Jill Adams, extension 4224.
 
Ferrum Disc Club – To provide leisure activities around campus and encourage good spirit and fellowship among all who play disc golf. Contact Mr. Dan Caston, extension 4442.
 
Ferrum Greek Council – A council that oversees, guides, and joins together the fraternities and sororities of Ferrum College in order to enforce policies as mutually agreed upon by all organizations. The council is established as a governing body of these organizations. Contact Mr. Dave Newcombe, extension 4463.
 
Ferrum Step Team – Formally represents Ferrum College with pride by creative stepping with combinations of stumps, clamps, body language and dance/step transition moves while delivering a message of commitment and teamwork to the audience. Contact Student Leadership, extension 4441.
 
Gamma Chi Gamma - Fraternity of all young male students who commit themselves to community service and strive to educate other male students how to become better leaders both on and off campus. Contact Ms. Tricia Butler, ext. 4441.
 
Intramural Programs – Student Leadership & Engagement offers a variety of intramural activities and makes available general recreation equipment for all students. Kappa Alpha Sigma – Open to all Ferrum College female students. Our goal is to improve ourselves, our community, our school, and our student body through educational, recreational, and cultural activities. Contact Mr. Jason Sharp, extension 4386.
 
Mu Sigma Chi -  Mu Sigma Chi Fraternity promotes the interest and welfare of the College campus and instills in its members the desire to achieve academic success, leadership skills, and to develop in both the spiritual and physical realms of everyday life. We believe that in order to grow closer to God we must be a group of men that serves others without desire of personal recognition. One - Grassroots campaign and advocacy organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world and every walk of life who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. Contact Mr. Jeff Dalton, ext. 4518.
 
Orientation Team – The “O” Team is one of the most popular groups on campus. Orientation team leaders work together to help new students feel comfortable and at home at Ferrum College. Contact Mr. Justin Muse, extension 4501.
 
Residence Hall Association – A campus-wide organization established to promote communication between residence halls and to develop a sense of unity and cooperative spirit. Students can become a Resident Advisor as well and help to maintain order and create programming in the residence halls. Contact Ms. Toni Davis, extension 4492.
 
Rotaract – Provides an opportunity for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development address the physical and social needs of their communities, and to promote better relations among all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service. Contact Mr. Rol Walters, extension 4267.
 
Running Club - Ferrum College Running Club is a student organized group that provides Ferrum College students and faculty an easy way to improve healthy lifestyles while also enjoying the opportunity to assist with other Ferrum College events. Ferrum College Running Club will encourage and support many different running abilities. Contact Mr. Chris Rill, extension 4446.
 
Sigma Alpha Kappa – Open to all male Ferrum College students. The purpose of the organization is to provide an added service experience while contributing to the social aspect of our school and community by following our credo of honor, loyalty, prestige, and sophistication. Sigma Sigma Chi - Sigma Sigma Chi all female Sorority promotes friendship, leadership, com-munity service and sisterhood, with an emphasis on spiritual growth. Contact Ms. Tricia Butler, ext. 4441.
 
Spectrum – An organization for Ferrum students, faculty, and staff who are interested in issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and diversity. Theta Chi Epsilon (QXE) – Open to all male students at Ferrum College, the purpose of QXE is to promote the spiritual, social, intellectual and moral welfare of its members, to encourage honorable achievements in every field of human endeavor, to inspire service in the public interest through community service, and to unite college men of culture, patriotism, and honor in a bond of fraternity. Theta Gamma Omega – Open to all female students at Ferrum College, “OGO” welcomes all females to unite for a common purpose. Contact Ms. Leslie Holden, extension 4460.
 
Wildlife Club – Open to all students who have an interest in the outdoors. The Wildlife Club has traditional events such as barbeques and fishing tournaments. Contact Dr. Todd Fredericksen, ext. 4360.
 
Zeta Theta Epsilon (ZQE) – Open to all female students, the purpose of ZQE is to promote the spiritual, social, intellectual, and moral welfare of its members, to encourage honorable achievements in every field of human endeavor, to inspire service in the public interest through community service, and to unite college women of culture, patriotism, and honor in the bond of sorority. CLASS OFFICERS


Freshman Class Officers
– Each September, members of the class elect officers who plan events for their class. Contact the Student Leadership and Engagement Office, extension 4441.
 
Sophomore Class Officers – Each spring, members of the class elects officers who plan class- related events during the following year. Contact Student Leadership Office, extension 4441.
 
Junior Class Officers – Each spring, members of the class elect officers who plan class-related events during the following year. Contact Ms. Jill Adams, extension 4224 or Ms. Elizabeth Legg,
Extension 4476.
 
Senior Class Officers – Each spring, members of the class elect officers who plan class-related events for the following year, including a semi-formal dinner dance at the end of the year. The officers work closely with the Alumni Office in selecting an appropriate class gift to be presented during commencement. Panther Productions – Your ticket to campus entertainment. This club plans concerts, dances,
 movies, comedians, and other special events. It also doubles as a club on campus. Volunteers learn the ins and outs of camps programming and publicity techniques, and develop strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Contact Mr. Justin Muse, extension 4501.
 
Student Government Association (SGA) – Consists of all students enrolled at Ferrum College. The purpose of the SGA is to “promote the general welfare of the students; to encourage personal responsibility, loyalty, and a high sense of honor; and to further the principles upon which our College was founded and continues to operate.” We are always looking for students to serve as SGA senators and on the Senate committees. SGA Activities Committee – A student advisory board that surveys students to identify their interests with respect to all forms of campus activities. They also sponsor campus forums to discuss student issues. Contact Mr. Justin Muse, extension 4501.
 
SGA Cabinet – The group of elected officers who represent the Ferrum College student body. The Cabinet runs for election as a group or slate of officers and is comprised of the following: President, Vice President for Legislation, Vice President for Student Activities, Secretary and Treasurer. SGA Executive Committee - The Executive committee ofthe SGA is composed of the SGA Cabinet, the presidents of the senior, junior, sophomore and freshmen classes and the Chairpersons of the Standing Committees of SGA. This is one of the 3 branches of the SGA (the Senate and Cabinet are theother 2).
 
SGA Senate – Made up of students representing both the commuter and residential populations, this group establishes legislation regarding student concerns, approves the SGA budget, facilitates the election process, and serves as a voice for students. Contact Mr. Justin Muse, extension 4501.
