George Byrd Memorial Garden

Dr. George T. ByrdDr. George T. Byrd came to Ferrum College in 2000 as an Assistant Professor of Agriculture. In subsequent years, he was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor. He was actively involved with students, his colleagues, and the community and served the College and its students with honor, integrity, and commitment until his untimely death, February 14, 2012.

To honor his memory and his commitment to agriculture and to Ferrum College, a memorial garden has been created in his memory. The dedication ceremony was held on Saturday, September 27, 2014, and the new garden will be developed further in the months and years to come.

The George T. Byrd Memorial Garden is reflective of Dr. Byrd’s character and the informal agricultural nature of the Titmus Center. Dr. Byrd’s memorial is comprised of two spaces- one a teaching/outdoor classroom and one a quieter more reflective garden of shade, wind, chimes, mountain views, and relaxed seating.

The Memorial Garden:  The memorial garden will be aligned with the barn, framed with four trees, symbolic of his four sons and siblings, and chimes representative of his music.

Outdoor Classroom: The outdoor classroom will have agricultural themed planters with Dr. Byrd’s research plants and current agriculture research at the Titmus Center, informal student seating, planted trellis, and a permeable brown stone surface.
