B.F.A. Degree

As in the Acting and Directing option, the Musical Theatre option has a strong academic emphasis with students gaining experience to reinforce the coursework through productions, large and small, local and touring, and summer theatre opportunities. The bachelor’s degree program in Theatre Arts using the Musical Theatre option emphasizes process drama, ensemble effort and improvisational skill augmented by music and dance courses and performance with the choral and dance ensembles. The Musical Theatre discipline involves a wide variety of performance, appreciation, theatre literature in an historical context, theory and technique courses. The student who wants to pursue a career in Musical Theatre will combine music, theatre and dance courses in the Musical Theatre curriculum course of study. Because of the flexibility of this program, students can prepare themselves for a career in Musical Theatre as producers, directors, performers, arts administrators and for graduate study. Students can complete a minor appropriate to their career goals.

Students must participate in significant performance activities as determined by the theatre faculty. Students will participate in the annual Theatre Arts Majors review that has been designed to assess their performance and academic progress. All students graduating from the Theatre Arts Program are required to research, develop, and present an appropriate senior seminar project. In addition, students who choose the Musical Theatre track with a B.F.A. objective must participate in an internship with a reputable theatre that is known for producing musical theatre productions.
