The Theatre Arts program has a strong academic emphasis with students gaining experience to reinforce the coursework through productions, large and small. The bachelor’s degree program in Theatre Arts emphasizes process drama. The program gives students opportunities to develop competency as producers, directors, performers, theorists, and teachers. The program prepares students for a variety of career options and graduate studies. Students are expected to participate in college productions and demonstrate performance and technical competence in a regular review by the theatre faculty. Students get broad exposure to the various disciplines within theatre and are encouraged by the faculty to pursue special interests. Internship experience is encouraged either in a summer theatre company, or in some other setting appropriate to the major such as with a television station or community theatre.

Notes: The nature of theatre as a field of study involves a considerable time commitment outside of regularly scheduled classes. Majors are expected to participate on stage or behind the scenes in all major productions, perform in ensemble companies, and general theatre work days sponsored by the department, as well as to perform in touring companies.   Students are expected to document a demonstrated performance competence in a yearly review conducted by the theatre arts faculty.

(no minor required) B.F.A. Degree Option:

Performers are best prepared when they study their performance area in a framework of a liberal arts education. The goal of all performance is to communicate an idea effectively. Therefore, performers need to understand as wide a range of ideas as possible, be competent in research for the field THA 301,302, and be accomplished artists. The program relies on classes to teach theory, to expose students to a wide range of performance possibilities, and to provide a framework for experimentation. It relies on actual performance to learn the practical realities of modern theatre, to develop performance skills and understandings, and to help students acquire performance flexibility. Graduates will have performed for a wide variety of audiences both on and off campus. They are ready to function as theatre practitioners with broad knowledge of theatre, sensitivity to artistic style, and insight into the role of theatre as an integral part of the human experience. Because the nature of the B.F.A. requires that students demonstrate performance skills over a period of time, students ordinarily declare their intention to seek this degree no later than five semesters before they intend to graduate; students who intend to graduate in fewer than five semesters must gain the endorsement of the coordinator of the theatre arts program before declaring the major. All students in the program must involve themselves in a minimum of three yearly reviews that evaluate their performance and academic progress.
