Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of behavior and mental processes.  Baccalaureate majors receive a broad background in the science of psychology which prepares them to enter graduate or professional schools or prepares them for careers in which knowledge of human thought and behavior is essential.  In the junior and senior years, students may elect field placement and internship experiences which integrate classroom learning with practical professional experience and which enhance preparedness for employment or graduate training.  Students qualify for an internship by receiving the recommendations of two psychology faculty members, by earning a 2.5 grade-point average, and by successfully completing an interview with departmental faculty members.  Further preparation is provided by opportunities to participate in the Psychology Club, Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology, and the professional psychological conferences, a regional undergraduate spring meeting at which Ferrum students frequently qualify to present their research papers.

The Experiential Component (requirement of the major) can be met by successfully completing one of the following:

Emphasis Areas

Upon entering the psychology program, the faculty recommend meeting with a faculty member to consider one of the following emphasis areas.  It should be noted that a student may choose not to select an emphasis area.  The student would then fulfill program requirements by selecting 21 hours of major electives in addition to the 18 required hours.

Should a student choose an emphasis area, there are at least 24 credit hours required in each emphasis area.

A.  Physiological and Biological Psychology Emphasis

The physiological/biological psychology emphasis will focus on the scientific study of the biological, cognitive, neurological, and physiological functioning, and their application to experimental research problems. This includes courses in memory storage and retrieval, human development, physiology of cognition and perception, the physiological bases of neurological and behavioral disorders, psychopharmacology, and specialized experimental design and research methods. Those who focus on this track will be well prepared for graduate studies at both the Master’s and Doctoral level, as well as many other health science careers. Pre-professional students in medicine, nursing and physical therapy interested understanding the brain’s physiological and psychological properties could also benefit from this track. Graduates focusing in physiological/biological psychology usually work in university and private research centers and in business, nonprofit, and governmental organizations. They study the behavior of both human beings and animals as related to cognitive and biological processes. Prominent areas of study in physiological/biological research include thought, attention, learning and memory, brain damage, sensory and perceptual processes, effects of substance abuse, and genetic and neurological factors affecting cognition and behavior.

B.  Clinical/Counseling Psychology Emphasis

This emphasis prepares students for entry into graduate school for different counseling and clinical areas (e.g., Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, the study of various therapeutic approaches), and also prepares students for careers in social service areas including mental health counseling, residential counseling, vocational counseling, and school counseling.

C.  Developmental Psychology Emphasis

This emphasis prepares students for entry into graduate school for different developmental areas (e.g., Child Psychology, Marriage and Family Counseling, Child/Adolescent Counseling, Adolescent Psychology or Counseling, School Counseling, Pediatric Psychology, Gerontology).  This emphasis also prepares students for careers in social service areas (e.g., Social Work), Day Care, Early Education Careers, Services for the Elderly, and Juvenile Probation Officer.

Prerequisites
PSY 201 is normally a prerequisite for all other psychology courses.  For PSY 211, 212, and 230, permission of the instructor may be substituted for the PSY 201 prerequisite.  There are additional prerequisites for PSY 306-307, PSY 348, PSY 450 and PSY 496 (see course descriptions).
