About the program
Theatre Arts is a dynamic program that has a strong history of student success in acting, directing and in musical theatre production. Experiential learning is the vibrant hallmark of the program. Students are immersed in exciting course work that is reinforced through a variety of production opportunities. The program, emphasizing process drama, gives students opportunities to develop competency as actors, directors, musical theatre performers, technicians, and teachers. The Theatre Arts program degree options are: Acting and Directing, and Musical Theatre.
Students who plan to act and direct can prepare and look forward to an exhilarating career in theatre arts. Those who are excited about a career in musical theatre will have the opportunity to take advantage of competitive theatre, music, and dance courses to ready themselves for the stage and screen.
Our successful graduates are enjoying satisfying careers and have excelled at advanced study in higher education. Our graduates have achieved success in a variety of areas within the field of theatre, film, television, and teaching. We boast a graduate who won an EMMY for makeup. Many of our graduates live and work in Hollywood while others prefer to use their talents to take up teaching careers at colleges and universities as well as in the public schools. Some graduates have pursued careers in arts management and others have followed the variety of career paths available to the liberal arts graduate. We have graduates who have used communication and self-expression to become everything from models to ministers, others are published writers, while still others have entered the political arena.
Experiential & hands-on learning opportunities
Senior Seminar Productions: Senior majors research, develop and produce a one-person play as the culmination of their degree program.
Internships: Students are strongly urged to explore career opportunities and to establish mentors through an internship.
Music Ensembles: Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of vibrant music ensembles, including the Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Collegiates, or Handbells.
Major Productions: The department does two full-developed plays featuring talents on stage, in design and in production.
Student One-act Series: Majors are given the opportunity to develop one-act plays that are student directed for public performance.
Experiential Term: Students are exposed to innovative and creative hands on course work during our intense three week theatre experience.
