Academic Resources Center

Tutoring Program Associate

Seasonal, 7 ½ month positions; 10 hours per week (per position); two positions available

Ferrum College is seeking applications for the position(s) of Seasonal Tutoring Program Associates to work in the Academic Resources Center (ARC) in the evening. There are two seven and a half month, 10 hours per week (per position), seasonal positions.

The Tutoring Program Associates are responsible for working with peer tutors and the implementing a range of academic tutoring components in the Academic Resources Center. Within this program the Tutoring Program Associates will work with the Director in training and supervising a qualified pool of peer tutors who work with fellow students in groups, individually and in labs.

These positions require a candidate who is able to comfortably converse with students, faculty, and staff and has experience in assistive educational technology. The candidate should be able to engage peer tutors in academic presentations and be someone students will feel is approachable when asking for academic help.  The candidate for these positions should be well organized and capable of working independently, as well as part of a team.

Minimum Qualifications: B.A or B.S in education, special education or related degree, with two to three years job related experience.  Experience interacting with college-level students and working knowledge of technological applications in learning assisted instruction and/or tutoring support.  A candidate for this position should be detail oriented, student-focused, professional with strong written and oral communication and customer service skills.

Housekeeper

Ferrum College has immediate openings in our Housekeeping Department. We are looking for reliable, conscientious individuals to perform general housekeeping duties in residential halls, office/classroom buildings, other buildings, and occasionally outside.  This involves cleaning using specialized chemicals and equipment, including buffers and carpet cleaning equipment occasionally.

Individuals will work in a variety of environments, both inside and outside.   Must be able to occasionally lift & carry up to 75 pounds and be capable of a full range of body motions including reaching, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and walking. 

This is a full time, 40-hour week position with occasional weekend and overtime work. Must be able to work a flexible schedule.  Drivers license and good driving record required.  Background check required.

Athletics Insurance Claims Coordinator

Ferrum College is currently seeking an individual for an Athletic Insurance Claims Coordinator. This is a seasonal position (no benefits) requiring approximately 10 hours per week during the school year. Primary responsibilities include record keeping for insurance claims, communicating effectively between insurance companies, athletic training staff, and policy owners.

Minimum qualifications: good record keeping/organization, good communication skills, experience with insurance companies is preferred, and experience with Microsoft Word is preferred.

On-Call Driver

Ferrum College is accepting applications for an On-call Driver to assist in meeting the transportation needs of Ferrum College. Vehicles used will be provided by the College.  Responsibilities may include transporting students on College-sponsored field trips, special events, or other off-campus opportunities; performing routine fueling and pre-trip inspection of vehicles; and recordkeeping.  This position requires some overnight travel.  A background check is required.

Applicants must be over 21 years of age; have a current Virginia driver’s license and good driving record; have the ability to drive safely in all types traffic conditions in both rural and urban settings; and must be willing to submit to post-offer and annual background checks, including Motor Vehicle Report checks.  Drivers may be required to undergo drug testing initially and periodically.   Drivers are required to operate vehicles in accordance with the Ferrum College Vehicle Safety Policy and other College policies as procedures, as well as applicable state and federal laws.

Police Officer

Ferrum College is currently seeking to fill the position of Police Officer. Candidates must be able to perform law enforcement and security functions within the College Police Department. Duties, responsibilities, and requisite skills include but are not limited to: providing vehicle, bicycle or foot patrol of the campus; responding to calls for service and on-view suspicious activities; resolving complaints; investigating criminal and traffic incidents; providing first responder aid when required; and other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications:

To be considered as a candidate, applicants must meet the following qualifications at the time of application:

• Must currently be certified as a police officer in the commonwealth of Virginia by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), or eligible for recertification under DCJS guidelines with 40 hours of Mandatory In-Service Retraining;

• Possess law enforcement experience;

• Possess a high school diploma or equivalent;

• Be at least 21 years of age;

• Have U.S. citizenship;

• Have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license;

• No driving under the influence (DUI) convictions.

• No felony convictions or convictions of misdemeanors involving crimes of moral turpitude or gross misconduct;

• Successfully pass an background investigation;

• Successfully complete a mandated Field Training Program administered by the department; and

• Must live within 45 miles of the Ferrum campus.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five years of law enforcement experience is preferred; 10 or more years is strongly desited;
  • Certified Crime Prevention Specialist
  • Presentation experience
  • Leadership experience; and
  • Experience in community-oriented policing.

Admissions Telecounselor

(16 Hours/Week: M-TH 5pm-9pm On Campus)

Ferrum College is seeking an Admissions Telecounselor to contact prospective students and to educate them about the application and enrollment process, scholarship opportunities and other aspects of Ferrum College.  This is a 12 month seasonal evening position, with potential for limited Saturday work, and the pay rate is $10.00 per hour.  The candidate will respect the College in a professional manner in all telecounseling and admissions activities and will accurately reflect and portray the mission of the College. 

The position reports to the Coordinator of Telecounseling and the Associate Dean of Admissions.  Responsibilities include effectively communicating with prospective students about scholarship opportunities at Ferrum College, providing information about the college, accurately gathering and recording demographic and academic information from prospective students, conducting follow-up and applicant calls, and performing other telecounseling tasks as assigned.
