Residence Hall Educator

Ferrum College is searching for one Residence Hall Educator. The RHE is a live-in professional staff member that is responsible for a residential area that houses approximately 400-600 students.  The RHE will supervise around 8-14 undergraduate student staff members.  The anticipated applicant should be mature, outgoing, enthusiastic, organized, since they are expected to be an active participant in campus life.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, community development, retention, RA recruitment, programming, education, advising, supervision of student staff, conflict mediation and resolution, policy enforcement, review of judicial cases, on call duties, and crisis intervention and response. Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree and prior graduate and/or professional residence life experience (2-3 years).  Qualified candidates should possess, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree, previous residence life experience, and a desire to work with college students.  

The RHE position is a 10-month working position paid over 12 months. The start date will be on or near January 4, 2017.  Compensation includes a competitive salary with benefits, an on-campus one-bedroom furnished apartment, and full meal plan when students are in session.

Police Officer

Ferrum College is currently seeking to fill the position of Police Officer. Candidates must be able to perform law enforcement and security functions within the College Police Department. Duties, responsibilities, and requisite skills include but are not limited to: providing vehicle, bicycle or foot patrol of the campus; responding to calls for service and on-view suspicious activities; resolving complaints; investigating criminal and traffic incidents; providing first responder aid when required; and other duties as assigned. The Ferrum College Police Department subscribes to a robust community-oriented policing philosophy in order to fulfill its mission. Qualifications: Required Qualifications: To be considered as a candidate, applicants must meet the following qualifications at the time of application: • Must currently be certified as a police officer in the commonwealth of Virginia by the Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS), or eligible for recertification under DCJS guidelines with 40 hours of Mandatory In-Service Retraining; • Possess law enforcement experience; • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent; • Be at least 21 years of age; • Have U.S. citizenship; • Have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license; • No driving under the influence (DUI) convictions. • No felony convictions or convictions of misdemeanors involving crimes of moral turpitude or gross misconduct; • Successfully pass an background investigation; • Successfully complete a mandated Field Training Program administered by the department; and • Must live within 45 miles of the Ferrum campus. Preferred Qualifications: • Five years of law enforcement experience is preferred; 10 or more years is strongly desired; • Certified Crime Prevention Specialist; • Presentation experience;

  • Leadership experience; and • Experience in community-oriented policing. Dining Room Manager

Ferrum College is seeking an immediate energetic, reliable, and responsible person to assume the duties as Dining Room Manager. This position requires a professional and positive attitude and the ability to promote and work in a team environment.  Responsibilities include opening/closing the Dining Hall, supervising staff and student employees, student payroll, assisting in scheduling, ensuring excellent customer service, food preparation and set up in a timely manner, operating POS system, making deposits, inventory control and assisting with daily office duties.

This is a full-time, 12 month position, working 40 hours per week. Weekend hours and occasional overtime is a must.  The ideal candidate must possess basic math and computer skills, be familiar with Microsoft Office Software, willing and able to multi-task, standing for long periods of time, and have excellent communication skills.  At least 2 years of management experience is preferred.

Locksmith - General Maintenance

Ferrum College has an opening for a Locksmith-General Maintenance in our Physical Plant Department. Primary responsibilities include a variety of tasks involving the repair and maintenance of locks, security systems, windows, and screens, and all necessary record-keeping concerning all locks and keys located on the college.  This position may also perform light carpentry and other general maintenance tasks.

This is a full time, 40-hour week position. Occasional weekend and overtime work required.  Must be able to lift and carry 20-50 pounds on a regular basis and work in all types of weather.  High school diploma or equivalent, and two years of experience preferred.  Valid driver’s license and good driving record are required.

Seasonal Farm Technician (19 hours per week)

Ferrum College is seeking a dynamic individual to support animal and plant science operations at the Titmus Agricultural Center (TAC) – our campus farm. The position responsibilities involve routine animal and plant care, facility upkeep and repair, and specific duties required for preparation for classes as required.  Hours for this seasonal position will be Tuesday-Friday, 4 hours per day, Saturday and Sunday, 1½ hours per day, Monday off. 

Bachelor’s degree in science is a plus (animal, plant, or environmental science, or other closely aligned discipline), and extensive prior practical experience in farm management. Must be self-motivated, disciplined, and well-organized. Applicant should have the ability to work well with a variety of people and be able to effectively interact with student workers. Experience with computer (Word, Excel, or related software). Possess or obtain and maintain a commercial pesticide applicators license within 6 months. A valid driver’s license and good driving record will be needed.

Preferred qualifications would include previously employed in similar roles related to farm management and experience with local food productions. A Class B Commercial Driver’s License is preferred, but not required.

Housekeeper

Ferrum College has immediate openings in our Housekeeping Department. We are looking for reliable, conscientious individuals to perform general housekeeping duties in residential halls, office/classroom buildings, other buildings, and occasionally outside.  This involves cleaning using specialized chemicals and equipment, including buffers and carpet cleaning equipment occasionally.

This is a full time, 40-hour week position with occasional weekend and overtime work. Must be able to work a flexible schedule.  Drivers license and good driving record required.  Background check required.

On-Call Driver

Ferrum College is accepting applications for an On-call Driver to assist in meeting the transportation needs of Ferrum College. Vehicles used will be provided by the College.  Responsibilities may include transporting students on College-sponsored field trips, special events, or other off-campus opportunities; performing routine fueling and pre-trip inspection of vehicles; and recordkeeping.  This position requires some overnight travel.  A background check is required.

Applicants must be over 21 years of age; have a current Virginia driver’s license and good driving record; have the ability to drive safely in all types traffic conditions in both rural and urban settings; and must be willing to submit to post-offer and annual background checks, including Motor Vehicle Report checks.  Drivers may be required to undergo drug testing initially and periodically.   Drivers are required to operate vehicles in accordance with the Ferrum College Vehicle Safety Policy and other College policies as procedures, as well as applicable state and federal laws.

Admissions Telecounselor

(16 Hours/Week: M-TH 5pm-9pm On Campus)

Ferrum College is seeking an Admissions Telecounselor to contact prospective students and to educate them about the application and enrollment process, scholarship opportunities and other aspects of Ferrum College.  This is a 12 month seasonal evening position, with potential for limited Saturday work, and the pay rate is $10.00 per hour.  The candidate will represent the College in a professional manner in all telecounseling and admissions activities and will accurately reflect and portray the mission of the College. 

The position reports to the Coordinator of Telecounseling and the Associate Dean of Admissions.  Responsibilities include effectively communicating with prospective students about scholarship opportunities at Ferrum College, providing information about the college, accurately gathering and recording demographic and academic information from prospective students, conducting follow-up and applicant calls, and performing other telecounseling tasks as assigned.
