Retail Operations - Lead Food Production Technician

 Ferrum College is seeking an outgoing, reliable, and responsible Lead Food Production Technician.  Supervisory experience and excellent customer service skills are required. Responsibilities include supervising and training hourly staff as well as student employees, serving customers, operation of and closing out cash register.

This is a full time, 12-month position, working 40 hours per week.  Weekend work and some overtime are required.   Supervisory skills, and current Safe Serve Certification preferred.  Must be able to stand for long periods of time; must have full range of body motions; and must be able to occasionally lift & carry up to 50 pounds.

Ferrum Mercantile/Mountain Creek Café Manager

Ferrum College has an immediate opening for a manager to assume responsibility for all functions of our Mountain Creek Café/Ferrum Mercantile food venues, serving our student and employee population, as well as the public.  This manager will deliver high quality products and customer service to ensure restaurant success by being a self-sufficient and professional leader, making quality decisions, and instilling pride and accountability in team members.  Responsibilities include the management of all units operations while executing all College and Retail Operations policies, procedures, programs and systems. This position ensures compliance with all federal, state and local laws, including health codes, and ethical business practices. 

This is a full time, 40-hour per week, non-exempt position requiring varying work schedules, including evenings, weekends and holidays.  The successful candidate will be very reliable and have excellent managerial skills to ensure successful operation.  Must have strong communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain a strong and successful team.  Must be able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds frequently. 


A high school diploma is required, as is a stable employment history and 3-5 years’ successful restaurant management experience.  Preference will be given to applicants with previous restaurant management experience.  Must have excellent computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office products and point-of-sale systems.  A valid driver’s license and good driving record are required.

Farm Manager

Ferrum College is seeking an individual to manage animal/plant operations and coordinate educational programming with faculty at the Titmus Agricultural Center (TAC).  The TAC includes forested acreage, 26 acres of grazed pasture, a mixed-crop garden, a greenhouse, high tunnel, “green building”, and a 6,000 sq. ft. barn – all located within a mile of main campus in the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Minimum qualifications are a Bachelor’s degree in science (animal, plant, or environmental science, or other closely aligned discipline), and practical experience in farm management.  Applicant should have the ability to work well with a variety of people and be able to effectively supervise student workers, be self-motivated, disciplined and well organized. Experience with computers (Word, Excel, or related software).  Possess or obtain and maintain a commercial pesticide applicators license within 6 months.  A valid driver’s license and good driving record will be needed.

Preferred qualifications are a Master’s Degree in Science.  Previously employed in similar roles related to farm management and experience with local food productions.  A Class B Commercial Driver’s License is preferred, but not required.

Interactive Media and Design Manager

Ferrum College has an immediate opening for an Interactive Media and Design Manager in the Marketing and Communications department. Responsibilities include oversight of professional and consistent college-wide interactive design and maintenance for all sites including www.ferrum.edu, various micro-sites, electronic communications, and social media. This includes collaboration with all academic and administrative departments on campus for portal, course management systems, content management system plus management of website hosting services. The ideal candidate will possess proficiency with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, PHP, XML, XSL, and XSLT as well as experience with Dreamweaver, OmniUpdate, CMS, WordPress, Linux OS, Fireworks, Photoshop, and Illustrator along with marketing, database management, digital photography, artistic, and strong writing skills.

Food Production Technician (10 month position)

Ferrum College has an immediate opening for a dependable and conscientious Food Production Technician to perform a variety of tasks, including food preparation, washing and cleaning.  Applicants must be able to follow recipes and identify ingredients used in recipes.

This is a 10 month, 40-hour week position, varying schedule with occasional holidays and possibly some overtime.  Applicants must be able to stand for long periods of time and must be able to lift 10-25 pounds frequently and 25-50 pounds occasionally.

Retail Operations Team Members

Seasonal Production Technicians

Ferrum College has several immediate openings for dependable and conscientious Retail Operations Team Members to assist in the daily operations of our retail venues by providing excellent customer service, assisting with food preparation, clean-up, stocking, and all functions necessary for successful operation of a food venue.

These are seasonal positions, averaging 19 hours or less per week, with varying work schedules including  holidays and weekends; offering no paid benefits.  Food service experience is preferred but will consider training candidates who have strong work ethic and are willing to learn.  Applicants must be able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.  The successful candidates be very reliable and will have good basic math skills, the knowledge and ability to operate a cash register and calculator, and basic computer skills.  These positions require excellent customer service and communication skills; honesty, good work ethic, professional attitude and the ability to be a team player.
