THE
FERRUM COLLEGE DEFINITION OF SERVICE LEARNING
Service Learning Requires:
-
A
collaboration between the college and one or more communities.
-
Projects
meet community-defined needs.
-
It
may be integrated into the academic curriculum (course-based,
credit bearing) or may be implemented as a co-curricular
activity.
-
In
either case, service learning requires time for reflection
(critical thinking, writing or talking) about the experience.
-
Ideally,
service learning enriches classroom knowledge and skills,
develops a sense of caring for others, and develops
civic responsibility.
