(March 21, 2011) – Washington, D.C. based hip-hop artist Wale, (pronounced Wah-Lay!) will be the headline performer at Ferrum College’s Big Concert on April 5 at 7 p.m. in the Ferrum College Fitness Center. Superstar recording artist Jay-Z recently signed Wale to his Roc Nation management company. Wale’s latest CD, Attention: Deficit was released in September and his first single, Chillin’ features Lady Gaga and is produced by beatsmiths Cool & Dre. “I just wanted to do something fun,” says Wale of the way his unorthodox delivery interweaves with Lady Gaga’s infectious melody.
Twenty four-year-old Wale Folarin broke out in 2005 appearing in Source Magazine’s Unsigned Hype column. That column launched such names as Notorious B.I.G., Common and Mob Deep. The son of Nigerian immigrants, Wale attributes his eclectic tastes to his father, a Washington, D.C. cab driver who brought home the musical likes of those he taxied around the nation’s capital.
“His musical tastes were all over the place,” Wale grins. “By the time I was born, I got all of them. Of course, in D.C. we have the go-go influence; that’s the sound of my niche so to speak. Then my father loved African music; then I would hear records from Thriller to the Beatles to LL Cool J to Jay-Z to Camp Lo to everything from down South. I was listening to all that stuff.”
Appearing with Wale will be Black Cobain and Fat Trel. The show will open with a performance by Ferrum College students Nicky Tunes (Nick Adams) and Ay Lano (Delano Hall) Admission $20 for the general public, no charge for Ferrum College Students.
