Ferrum College Agriculture Club President to compete in February National Discussion Meet in Michigan.
Ferrum, Va. (Dec. 19, 2011) –
Ferrum College senior Deanna Reid, of Broadway, Va., won the 2011 Farm Bureau Collegiate Young Farmer Discussion Meet held at Blue Ridge Community College in Weyers Cave, Va., on Nov. 11, 2011. Reid, along with Emily Landrum from New River Community College, will represent Virginia during the Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers National Convention in February in Grand Rapids, Mich.
“I am excited about traveling to Michigan but I am nervous about competing against winners from around the United States,” said Reid, a triple major in Agribusiness, Horticulture, and Spanish who is interested in an international marketing career. During the National Convention, Reid will compete in a national discussion meet, attend seminars, participate in tours, and meet agriculturalists and collegiate Young Farmers from across the country.
A discussion meet is a judged conversation on agricultural topics. Contestants know the questions beforehand and research and practice ahead of a competition. In addition to Reid, who serves as the Ferrum College Agriculture Club president, the Club sent two other contestants, freshman Brad Lael, of Spotsylvania, Va., and freshman Jonathan Mayo, of Waynesboro, Va., to the November event.
