Slang, burned-down schools, cloning, gaming, Dr. Seuss, and American music will all be featured during this free event open to men and women alike.
Ferrum, Va. (Feb. 14, 2012) – Slang, burned-down schools, cloning, gaming, Dr. Seuss, and American music will all be featured at the Ferrum College Women’s Leadership Conference on March 15, 2012. Everyone is welcome to this free event, which is open to men and women alike.
Martha Barnette, of the nationally syndicated radio show “A Way with Words,” will give the keynote speech. Her show, which can be heard locally on Radio IQ 89.9, features discussions about slang, regional dialects, books, writing, and word origins.
Tammy Wood (’94), a kindergarten teacher at Meadows of Dan Elementary School, will be the alumna speaker. The school burned down last August and Ms. Wood will talk about going from a technologically sophisticated school to an environment more common fifty years ago.
A staged reading of the play “A Number” by modern British playwright Caryl Churchill will challenge the audience to think about the repercussions of cloning human beings. Ferrum College drama professor Helen Prien will direct the play.
Computer gaming will be the topic of a discussion panel including Ferrum College student and gamer Brandi Locklear, political science professor Ed Hally, and Southern author Lynn Salsi, who teaches storytelling to simulation and computer game writers.
Actors from “Seussical,” the Ferrum College spring musical, will provide entertainment at the luncheon, which is free to those attending the conference.
The evening entertainment will include local band “After Jack,” comprised of Emily Rose Tucker, Rachel Blankenship, and Mary Allison, who perform everything from gospel to “Lady Gaga.”
The 2012 Women’s Leadership Conference is dedicated to the memory of Ferrum alumna Franki Patton Rutherford, the 2006 Conference keynote speaker and inspiring social activist who died last year.
