New “Learn & Lodge” packages will provide insight into the musical history of the Blue Ridge region.
Ferrum, Va. (July 5, 2012) – New this year, Ferrum College FloydFestPLUS! “Learn & Lodge” packages will offer FloydFest goers more than just a comfortable night’s sleep and hot shower just down the ‘Crooked Road’ from the renowned Festival. Held July 26 – 29, 2012, in conjunction with FloydFest, these new packages include special programs at the Blue Ridge Institute & Museum that will give participants insight into the history of the region’s music.
“An awareness of musical history and context adds so much to Roots and Americana music experience,” said Institute Executive Director Roddy Moore. “The FloydfestPlus! packages at Ferrum College will sharpen the listener’s ear for Floydfest’s great folk music performances.”
The FloydFestPLUS! programs include a Crooked Road Music Trail lecture given at 10 a.m. Friday, July 27, by Moore and Vaughan Webb, the Institute’s assistant director. Moore has appeared on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow and is a nationally renowned expert on the culture, history and folk art of the Blue Ridge region. By touring the Museum’s newly expanded galleries, visitors can learn even more from exhibits featuring the music and history of The Crooked Road.
The following morning at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, July 28, the Dry Hill Draggers, past performers at FloydFest, will be featured. These talented local string musicians include the sons of some of the founding “old time” band members and carry on the traditions of the area’s vibrant musical heritage. The band members will offer the opportunity for questions and conversation at the end of their set.
In addition to these unique Blue Ridge educational experiences, the Ferrum College FloydFestPLUS! packages include festival admission, lodging in one of the College’s newest residence halls, breakfast and take-away lunches. For festival goers who’ve already purchased their FloydFest pass, the College also offers a “Learn & Lodge” and meals-only package.
