Ferrum, Va. (Feb. 9, 2012) – Ferrum College President Dr. Jennifer L. Braaten and Vice President for Enrollment, Dr. Douglas Clark visited the offices of Rep. Robert Hurt (R) 5th District on February 1, 2012.
The Ferrum leadership team updated Rep. Hurt on the need for continued funding for the Pell Grant program, which is critical to the College’s mission of reaching out to first generation college students.
“The Pell program enables Ferrum College to grant access to many, many students who would otherwise be unable to afford college, and might bypass the opportunity for a better life,” said Braaten, who pointed out that 99-percent of Ferrum students receive financial assistance and 59-percent receive money from the Pell program.
The soon-to-be-online English Biomass Energy and Research Complex was another topic discussed during the meeting with Hurt. The facility will provide energy for heat and hot water on campus as well as electricity for the grid, while burning fuels previously seen as waste from the timber industry. It will also serve as a state-of-the-art instructional tool for Ferrum College students.
“We wanted Rep. Hurt to know that Ferrum College is creating cutting edge technology in the 5th District,” said Clark.
