Ferrum College Claims Share of 2012 USA South Football Title
Ferrum, Va. (Nov. 13, 2012) Ferrum College's football team claimed a share of the 2012 USA South Athletic Conference title, finishing in a three-way tie with Maryville College and Christopher Newport University.
The Panthers earned the shared title despite suffering a 22-17 loss to Maryville Saturday, Nov. 10, at W.B. Adams Stadium. Christopher Newport led Methodist University 23-14 at halftime Saturday night. If the Captains held on, they would win the league title outright and advance to the NCAA Division III playoffs. Methodist came back to post a 30-29 win, scoring with less than three minutes left in regulation for the upset win.
Despite the loss to Methodist Saturday night, CNU advances to the NCAA Division III playoffs by virtue of head-to-head wins over both Ferrum and Maryville this season. The Captains take on 10-time national champion Mount Union (Ohio) College on the road in the opening round of the playoffs this Saturday.
Ferrum closed out its 2012 season at 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the USA South under 2nd-year Head Coach Dave Harper. Harper has a 14-6 career coaching mark. The Panthers lose 14 players to graduation this season.
This is Ferrum's fourth USA South title (2001, 2002, 2005, 2012). The first two titles were shared with Christopher Newport when the league was still the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The 2005 title was shared with Methodist, but the Panthers collected the NCAA playoff bid with a head-to-head win over the Monarchs.
The USA South will announce its All-Conference football team this week and a number of Ferrum players are expected to be in contention for position and Player of the Year honors.
