Ferrum College Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Classes will be on a compressed schedule to accommodate campus
activities.
Ferrum, Va. (January
16, 2011) – Ferrum College will operate on a compressed schedule on Monday,
January 17, 2011 in honor of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Students planned a number of activities
including a march in the morning and an evening ceremony in Vaughan Chapel that
would include a key note address from Bernice Cobbs, a Ferrum Alum, and Vice
President of the Alumni Board of Directors.
College President Jennifer Braaten and the Administrative
Council approved the compressed schedule at the request of the Student
Government Association. The
changes to the normal class schedule are included below.
In an e-mail to campus, Senior Class President
Jeremiah Cook urged students to participate, saying, “I am writing to
invite you to the various activities that are happening in honor of Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day … This is a great opportunity to get out and learn about
the meaning of the day, as well as, it is a great chance to fellowship with one
another.”
Events are scheduled as follows:
- Diversity
March @ 9:30 A.M. starting at
the Panther's Den -- a speech addressing social issues from the
perspective of a Ferrum College student; also, a symbolic march
around the quad as a way of advocating for social equality and justice
followed by a digital presentation of the famous "Been to the Mountain Top" speech
Dr. King performed before he was assassinated.
- MLK
Day Celebration @ 7:00 P.M. in Vaughn Chapel--
a digital presentation of Dr. King giving the "I Have a Dream
Speech." Next, Ms. Bernice Cobbs, a Ferrum Alum who has achieved much
success within the field of education.
A portion of Bernice Cobbs’ biography
reads as follows:
Joyce Bernice Cobbs graduated
magna cum laude from Ferrum College in 1998, earning a Bachelor of Liberal Arts
with endorsements in Math and English.
Prior to Ferrum, Bernice graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Western
Community College. After Ferrum,
Bernice received a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of
Virginia and a Masters of Science in Educational Leadership from Radford University. She holds a Certificate from Virginia
Tech’s Center for Organizational and Technological Advancement for completion
of its Virginia School Leaders Institute.
She also holds a Certificate from Harvard University’s Graduate School
of Education for completion of its 2010 Leadership: An Evolving Vision
Institute.
Bernice has served as
principal of Snow Creek Elementary School, principal of Boones Mill Elementary
School, K-5 Director of Instruction, and is currently 6th grade
Administrator at Benjamin Franklin Middle School. Prior to her time in administration, Bernice served as a
classroom teacher, co-coordinator of a Teaching American History grant, and a teacher
mentor.
